Lady Vik bowlers win fifth-straight tourney
It was another successful weekend
of tournament bowling for the Siuslaw
boys and girls bowling teams, with the
Viking boys rolling at home while the
Lady Vikings were on the road in
North Bend.
At home, Siuslaw again made the
finals by finishing in first place during
the qualifying round. The Vikings won
the first match, defeating Willamette to
advance to the final match against rival
North Bend.
The Bulldogs came out strong, win-
ning the first in the two-game match.
Even though the Vikings came back to
win the second game, the first-game
deficit was too much to overcome fin-
ishing second with North Bend taking
first.
Meanwhile, the Lady Vikings com-
peted at North Bend in search of their
fifth-straight tournament title.
Because coach Dusty Anderson
needed to remain at Holiday Bowl to
run the boys’ tournament, he relied on
new assistant coach Alan Medeiros to
helm the coaching duties for the Lady
Vikings. The team easily made the
finals after finishing first in qualifying
round. Advancing to the first match of
finals, Siuslaw defeated North Bend to
face Cottage Grove in the title match.
With a 12-pin deficit after the first
game, the Lady Viks rallied in the sec-
ond game to keep their winning
momentum by claiming their fifth-
consecutive tournament champi-
onship.

Don’t let your trout
fishing season end just
because the cold weather
has arrived. Here are just
some of the weekend
opportunities from this
week’s Rec Report:
• Several ponds and
lakes in the Willamette
Zone just took delivery of
large brood trout.
• In the Southeast Zone,
the Ana River has been
kicking out trout in the
12-to 16-inch range. The
Blitzen also has great
year-round fishing.
• Expo and Reinhart
ponds in the Southwest
Zone were recently
stocked with legal and
larger trout last week.
• The Central Zone has
several popular winter
trout fisheries including
the Deschutes, Fall and
Metolius rivers. Also the
Crooked River, which has
rebounded in 2017.

Remember safe boating as crab presoak period begins
The Coast Guard is reminding com-
mercial fishermen and the boating
public to remember safe boating prac-
tices and honor crabber-towboat lane
agreements with the start of the pre-
soak period for the commercial
Dungeness crab season, which began
Jan. 12.
Crab season opens Monday, Jan. 15.
Coast Guard safety teams have
already terminated three commercial
fishing vessel voyages within the
District 13 area of responsibility in the
past 30 days for substandard safety
conditions.
Important safety practices for all
commercial and recreational boaters
include:
• All commercial crabbers and
boaters working or standing on deck
should be wearing a Coast Guard
approved lifejacket
• Check current and future weather
conditions
• Check and beware of changing sea
conditions especially on or near the
river bars — if it appears that bar con-
ditions will prevent you from return-
ing home please call your local Coast
Guard station via VHF-FM radio for
assistance
• Ensure your (emergency signaling
devices) “safety equipment are up to
date and in proper working order, such
as; life raft, immersion suits, EPIRB,
and fire extinguishers”
• Ensure crab pots are secure aboard
your vessel and not overloading your
vessel
• Know your skill level and limita-
tions
Coast Guard commercial fishing
vessel examiners have been conduct-
ing dockside exams during the past
several months to increase fleet readi-
ness.
Recreational boaters are encour-
aged to schedule a free safety exam
with the local Coast Guard Auxiliary.
