PROMPTS
Effective Jan. 22, the hours of oper-
ation at the East Woahink, West
Woahink and Sand Dune day use areas
at Jessie M. Honeyman State Park will
revert to standard daylight business
hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Access from Canary Road will be
gated overnight, and opened daily, as
posted.
Park Manager Justin Helberg noted
that gates to the areas had been kept
open as a courtesy to dog walkers, jog-
gers and other users who come to the
areas early — or late — in the day. The

TO REDUCE HOURS
West Woahink and Sand Dune areas
were being used respectfully, with a
few isolated incidents.
However, East Woahink suffered
from vandalism and persistent, serious
problems with unauthorized driving.
This left the natural, grassy area dam-
aged beyond routine repair.
Helberg was concerned the East
Woahink problems would spread to
the other two areas, which prompted
the after-hours closure of all three
sites.
“It’s very unfortunate,” Helberg
said. “But the East Woahink area has
become so degraded and the incidents
so frequent that we are now concerned
for public safety.”
Helberg said that because all three
day use areas are somewhat isolated,
reports of problems often come too
late for staff or law enforcement to
intervene.
Park hours are posted on signs
around the park.
Visitors can also check the state
park website at www.oregonstateparks
.org.

The Viking girls and boys basketball
teams will kick off the Far West
League season this Friday after wrap-
ping up the preseason last night against
Junction City (after press deadlines).
The game capped a weekend of
competition on the road, with both
Siuslaw teams in Grants Pass for the
Skyline Crossover Tournament.
While the Lady Vikings were on the
hardwood at North Douglas High
School, the Viking boys were at
Hidden Valley High School, where
they went 1-1 to improve to 8-5 over-
all.
Last Friday, the boys picked up their
fourth consecutive win in a narrow 48-
44 win against the Klamath Union (6-
7).
They moved into day two of the
tournament to face North Valley (6-7),

The Viking wrestling team spent its
weekend at the 11-team multi-division-
al North Bend Invitational, where sen-

Don’t let your trout fish-
ing season end just because
the cold weather has
arrived. Here are just some
of the weekend opportuni-
ties from this week’s Rec
Report:
• Several ponds and
lakes in the Willamette
Zone just took delivery of
large brood trout.
• In the Southeast Zone,
the Ana River has been
kicking out trout in the 12-
to 16-inch range. The
Blitzen also has great year-
round fishing.
• Expo and Reinhart
ponds in the Southwest
Zone were recently stocked
with legal and larger trout
last week.
• The Central Zone has
several popular winter
trout fisheries including the
Deschutes, Fall and
Metolius rivers. Also the
Crooked River, which has
rebounded in 2017.
Winter steelhead water
watch
This time of year, water
conditions for winter steel-
head fishing can vacillate
between too low and clear,
and too high and muddy.
Successful anglers will:
1) adjust their gear and
tackle for current condi-
tions, and/or
2) be ready to hit the
water when water condi-
tions improve — usually
once water levels start to
drop after a good rain.
Check out the zone
reports for your best bets.
SIUSLAW RIVER:
Steelhead, Chinook
A few winter steelhead
are starting to be caught in
the lower river.
Fall Chinook fishing has
been slowing down, but a
few fish are still available.
