Teen Giving Tree full of
wishes, ready for donations
Twin
Lakes
Store’s
Christmas tree is lit and filled
with ornaments from local
teenagers. The ornaments
from area youth contain wish-
es and things truly needed,
including educational items.
Now is the time for commu-
nity members to stop in and
see what teens in need are ask-
ing for.
Presents can be dropped off,
wrapped or unwrapped, any
day during business hours.
Twin Lakes Store is located
four miles north of Florence
on Highway 101.
A distribution party is
scheduled for Dec. 21, at 6
p.m.
Everyone is invited to
attend.
For more information or to
help with fundraising, call
Twin Lakes Store at 541-997-
3021.
Women Vets to meet Dec. 8
Coastal Women Veterans
will host its monthly luncheon
on Friday, Dec. 8, at 11:30
a.m., at Shorewood Senior
Living, 1451 Spruce St.
In the spirit of the holidays,
re-gift a “white elephant” you
can’t use but maybe someone
else can. Each attendee is wel-
comed to bring along at least
one of their own personal
“white elephants.”
Participants are asked to not
obscure what the gift is,
though they may attach a bow
or ribbon. This version of the
holiday game allows the other
members to see exactly what
they are selecting when it’s
their turn at the White
Elephant table.
All women who have served
in any branch of the military
are invited, as well as their
spouses or caregivers.
Space is limited so prior
reservations are encouraged.
RSVP by contacting Sharon
Armstrong at sarmstrong@
msn .com or 541-999-5094.

Herb Enthusiasts help hungry youth
Florence Herb Enthusiasts is
gone, but hasn’t forgotten its
community. When the club dis-
banded, members wanted to
continue to support the local
Food Backpack 4 Kids pro-
gram. On Dec. 2, club founder
Jacquie Beveridge and treasur-
er Lea Rudd met with program
CEO and pastor Dale Edwards,
program director Marilyn
Barba and program finance
coordinator Deb Williams to
present a check in the amount
of $1,294.18.
“While this amount seems
significant, it will only meet
the needs of 71 students for one
week,” said Beveridge.
Food Backpack 4 Kids is
currently feeding 82 children in
Siuslaw School District and 25
in Mapleton on weekends dur-
ing the school year. For the
2017-18 school year, the cost to
feed each identified student is
$578.00 (The cost is variable
because the purchase price of
the food varies.)
All funds donated support
local children and local busi-
nesses.
“Last year, more than
$55,000 stayed in our commu-
nity,” Beveridge said. “Every
dollar donated to Food
Backpacks 4 Kids is spent on
food only and donations are tax
deductible.”
All operational expenses are
underwritten by Cross Road
Assembly of God.

Siuslaw School District
Superintendent Andy
Grzeskowiak said of the pro-
gram, “Prior to the Food
Backpack Program, Monday
mornings and Friday after-
noons were the times of unusu-
al behavior for some children
in our schools.
“For the children that had lit-
tle or no food over the week-
end, Monday morning was the
time when many children
scrambled to satisfy their
hunger by eating everything
they could get their hands on.”
Grzeskowiak explained that
some children would roam
from table to table, asking
friends for any uneaten or
unwanted foods.
“Friday afternoons saw the
hoarding of food by students
who knew that nothing may be
at home for the next few days,”
Grzeskowiak said. “Certain
students would bring their
school bags to the cafeteria and
collect anything that was given
away or left behind to take
home.”
Since the donation of the
weekend food bags began, the
mad scramble for foods on
Monday mornings and Friday
afternoons has ceased, said
Grzeskowiak.
Florence Herb Enthusiasts
presented more than 140 edu-
cational programs for the com-
munity during its 12-year exis-
tence.
“Members are thankful to be
able to support the Food
Backpack 4 Kids program as
they have done in the past,”
said Beveridge.
Siuslaw Vision to Host Update and Planning Workshop
Where do people see the
Siuslaw Region in 2025? How
can they come together to
make it happen? The people of
Siuslaw are already working to
make it happen.
On Thursday, Dec. 7,
Siuslaw Vision 2025 will be
hosting two special events in
the Bromley Room of the
Siuslaw Public Library, located
at 1460 9th Street in Florence.
The public is invited to
attend and be part of the evolv-
ing future of our community.
From 8:15 to 9:45 a.m., the
Siuslaw Vision Keepers will
highlight some ongoing proj-
ects.
The meeting will include a
short cooking demonstration,
healthy morning snacks and an
update from the Local Foods
initiative.
Next, the Vision Keepers
will provide a short history of
the Siuslaw Vision and its
progress to date. Then initiative
updates will be provided by
local community groups
including:
Siuslaw
Broadband's fiber pilot project;
the
ReVision
Florence
streetscape project; Career
Technical Education collabora-
tions
with
the
Lane
Community College Florence
Center; First Step housing
options ford the unhoused;
Siuslaw
Youth
Soccer
Association;

Art

Florence
concept;
the
Mapleton Preschool Program;
United Way the Community
Health Improvement Program;
and
an
overview
of
RiverCal.org, the region's new
community calendar and web-
site.
Then, from 10:30 a.m. to
noon, the public is invited to a
special workshop for
“Achieving a vision, 90 days at
a time,” presented by Max
Gimbel, Associate Director of
the
Ford
Institute
for
Community Building, a part of
The Ford Family Foundation.
Long-term plans can be
overwhelming and often move
very slowly. Daily to-do lists,
without long-term vision, are
short-sighted. Ninety day plan-
ning is a simple but powerful
approach to moving a group
towards a vision by defining
accomplishments or bench-
marks that can be achieved
within 90 day increments.
Groups celebrate the progress
at the end of the 90 days, then
start again.
A continuous sense of
accomplishment is motivating
to participants, and groups
become committed to the long
term vision as they see they are
making progress.
This 90 minute workshop
will provide an opportunity to
experience 90 day planning
with direct application to
work.
Participants should come
prepared to do 90 day planning
on a project, action or initiative
that is dear to its heart.
Both of these events are free
and open to the public. They
can attend one or both.
