It took every second of last Friday’s
nailbiter between the Vikings’ and
Falcons’ boys teams at Elmira, where
Siuslaw held a 12-point lead that dwin-
dled to a 1-point deficit late in the
fourth quarter following a three-point-
er by the Falcons.
In the final seconds, senior post
Trent Reavis got the ball on a dish
from senior Jared Brandt. Working the
paint, Reavis was able to score on a
quick bucket for a narrow 45-44 win.
Reavis led all scoring with 14 points,
followed by 11 points from senior
Kyle King and 10 points from fellow
senior Jake Hickson.
Earlier that night, the Lady Vikings
kept things close during the first half
with a 26-26 tie entering the third
quarter. But a late rally by the Falcons
left Siuslaw trailing by 12 at the final
buzzer, 54-42. Freshmen Lindsey
Long and Brea Blankenship led scor-
ing with 12 points apiece for Siuslaw.
This Thursday, both teams kick off a
three-day tourney in Harrisburg.
Siuslaw senior Trent Reavis led
scoring with 14 points in a 45-44
non-league nailbiter at Elmira.

required for all persons oper-
ating any type of watercraft
over 10 horsepower, and

boat.
The U.S. Coast Guard
Auxiliary is presenting an
Oregon State Marine Board
approved class in Florence to
obtain a mandatory boater
education card.
The class will be held
Saturday, Dec. 9, from 8:30
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Siuslaw
Valley Fire and Rescue,
2625 Highway 101.
Cost is $15, and pre-regis-
tration is required and space
is limited.
To register, contact Rick
Parsons, U.S. Coast Guard
Auxiliary, at 541-463-1797.
Weather has not been
very cooperative for ocean
fishing the last couple of
weeks. When anglers have
been able to get out, there
has been success in both
the flatfish and longleader
fisheries.
In the flatfish fishery,
creels included sanddabs,
sand sole and Petrale sole.
The creels from long-
leader trips consisted of
yellowtail, widow, red-
stripe and silvergray rock-
fishes, plus a handful of
jack mackerel (which has a
separate daily bag limit,
under Offshore Pelagic
Species, of 25 fish in
aggregate).
From now through the
end of the year, limited
bottomfish fishing
reopened outside of the 40
fathom regulatory line,
only with the use of long-
leader gear. (Bottomfish
fishing remains closed
inside the 40 fathom regu-
latory line.) Longleader
gear has a minimum of 30
feet between the sinker, or
weight, and the lowest
hook.
Additionally, a non-com-
pressible float above the
top hook is required. No
bait or lures larger than
five inches in length are
allowed. This gear is
designed to target midwa-
ter rockfish species such as
yellowtail, widow, and
canary rockfish, while
avoiding the more bottom
dwelling yelloweye rock-
fish.
The daily bag limit is 10
fish per angler for the
remainder of 2017. During
this reopening, retention of
