OBITUARIES
ROZAIRE-BROWN—Dr.
Beverley Rozaire-Brown, 71,
of Florence, passed away Nov.
21, 2017.
Beverley was born in
Montreal,
Canada,
on
Valentine’s
Day 1936, to
Mary
and
Percy (Buck)
Brown. She
spent
her
childhood in
Montreal and
summers at
the family
Beverley
Rozaire-Brown home on Lac
St. Joseph in
the Laurentian mountains.
Her father died when she
was 16. She used this as an
opportunity to quit high school,
which she detested, and started
working. A great aunt in
Southern California urged her
to visit. That visit culminated in
her returning to Montreal to
apply for a visa.
After obtaining a visa, she
moved to California, where she
worked for the motion picture
distribution industry and start-
ed college. She obtained an AA
degree from Santa Monica City
College, eventually receiving a
BA from UCLA, San Fernando
Valley State and Jacksonville
State.
She then followed with a
MA degree in human relations
from Oklahoma University.
Finally, she received a PHD in
psychology from Oregon State
University. This was over a
period of 15 years and still
without a high school diploma
or GED.
In 1963, she received a direct
commission as a Second
Lieutenant in the U.S. Army
and served 15 years, leaving
with the rank of Major. She was
the first woman to command an
all-male, then male and female
training company.
Her last assignment was
Chief
of
Organizational
Development Training courses
at Ft. Benjamin Harrison.
After leaving the military,
Beverley settled in Florence,
working at both Oregon State
University and Lane County
Community College. She also
spent time in Manhattan Beach
and Palm Springs, Ca.
She had a real passion for
adventure, traveling throughout
the world. Her last trip was to
Victoria Canada for 10 days.
She was also active in the Log
Cabin Republican Club.
Beverley was preceded in
death by her loving spouse of
many years, Genevieve Newby.
Beverley
was
an
Episcopalian who found solace
with the church. Most recently,
she attended St. Andrews
Episcopal Church in Florence.

18, 2017.
He is survived by his loving
wife of 26 years, Eileen; his
dog, Misty; four children:
Allyson, Janine, Jennifer and
Michael; his
former wife,
Patricia
Bradford;

P h i l i p
Bradford of
Hillsboro,
Ore.; nine
grandchil-
Gordon
dren: Travis,
Bradford
Ashley,
McKenna, Luke, Shaun, Ryan,
Kayla, Megan and Sarah; and
one great-grandchild, Aiden.
Gordon was born Sept. 29,
1937, to Genevieve and Harry
Bradford in Portland, Ore. He
was a graduate of the
University of Portland and
served America as a member of
the United States Army.
He was a teacher in his early
career and worked for the
American Cancer Society. He
retired from the Oregon State
Hospital as a behavioral thera-
pist.
Gordon accomplished many
different things in his life. He
loved being a mountain climber
and taking his children on
many hikes in Oregon. He
loved fishing and so did Misty.
He also had a passion for
gardening, wood carving, read-
ing and life’s adventures.
Gordon loved laughing, joking
around, and his favorite song
was “Welcome to my world!”
Gordon would never like to
say goodbye to his friends and
family; he would say “Happy
trails until we meet again” and
“Wagons Ho!”
We would like to say to our
husband, father, brother and
grandfather: Happy trails until
we meet again! Wagons Ho!
Fish On! Say ‘Hi’ to Lucy for
us!”
A celebration of life service
will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at
Burns’s Riverside Chapel at 1
p.m. Following the service, a
gathering will be held at
Florence Senior Center from 2
to 4 p.m.

in charge of all arrangements.
VADAKIN—Valerie Sue
Vadakin, 56, formerly of
Florence (primarily of Yachats
and Waldport), passed away
with her family at her side Nov.
22, 2017.
Val was an Oregon Coast
native through and through,
born in Florence on July 23,
1961. She
spent
her
childhood
combing the
beach, driv-
ing
the
dunes and
hunting and
fishing with
her dad and
Valerie
brother. She
Vadakin
enjoyed trips
back to the family farm in
Aumsville, where she learned
to snap beans and shuck corn
with her grandmother, and
gained an appreciation for
rocks and gems from her grand-
father.
Val was excellently eccen-
tric. She loved night rides for
low tides, and hunting for
agates by flashlight, preferring
the solace of a beach free from
tourists, families and dogs.
She adored her cats, her gar-
den and her family. She had
great friends and loved good
food and bass-heavy music.
Val could be found cruising
Highway 101 with her stereo
system cranked and windows
cracked, shrugging her shoul-
ders to the bass thumping from
the subs in the back.
She was a free spirit with a
generous, loving heart. Val
lived how she wanted, and only
wanted the best.
She was known to surprise
her friends and family with
gifts. If she found something
she loved, everyone she loved
would have one had one as
well.
Val will be remembered for
her caring nature, quirky sense
of humor and her magnificently
meticulous ways.
Valerie is survived by her
significant
other
Troy
Remington; her daughters
Carly and Chelsey Remington,
and Chelsea Vadakin; her
brother, Brian Lewis; and par-
ents Jerry Lewis and Janis
Hahl.
Memorial services will take
place after the New Year. Date,
time, and location are yet to be
determined.
For inquiries about the
memorial service or where to
address condolences, please

Most people have heard of the
3Rs of environmentally
friendly behavior-
REDUCE is to use less of something.
Use less water, turn off lights,
use both sides of a paper.
REUSE is to use an item again. Refi ll a water bottle, reuse a
container and buy reusable bags.
RECYCLE is to make new items from old ones; recycle
bottles, glass, paper, cans, plastic, cardboard & more.
T ip
Reduce Waste During the Holidays
Use earth-friendly gift wrapping alternatives,
such as
• Scarves, handkerchiefs and bandannas
• Old posters and maps
• Newspapers (the comic sections works great)
• A present in a present. Place gifts inside reusable containers
like cookie tins, fl ower pots, and baskets or wrap gift in cloth
napkins or kitchen towels.
• Give a “treasure map” to fi nd an unwrapped gift hidden
elsewhere in the house
• Wrap gifts in your children’s or your own artwork
• Look through old magazines, catalogs and calendars to use
attractive photos
• Use re-useable or re-used gift bags
• Replace ribbons and bows with natural evergreens, berries,
dried fl owers. Keep them as decorations or compost them
after the gifts are unwrapped.
• Wrapping paper made from recycled paper
