FloTones to bring holiday hits for kids Presbyterian Church of Siuslaw
The FloTones is inviting the
public to have a “cool Yule” as
the Florence jazz vocal group
sings classic holiday favorites
as well as recent hits from
Christmas movies like “Polar
Express” and “Home Alone.”
The concert will benefit the
Western Lane County Boys
and Girls Club, and will also be
inviting Santa to take pictures
with kids and adults alike.
The performance will be
held on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 3
p.m. It will be held at Cross
Road Assembly of God
Church, located at 1380 10th
Street.

welcomes new accompanist
Sylvia Lorraine Hartman
joined the music staff at the
Presbyterian Church of the
Siuslaw last October as choir
accompanist, church pianist
and organist.
Hartman also delights the
congregation with her talent on
the harp.
In addition, she also joined
the church’s bell choir, which
plays for the worship service
on the second Sunday of each
month.
“Sylvia continues a long tra-
dition of very good church
musicians in our congrega-
tion,” said Rev. Greg Wood,
pastor of the church. “We are
excited by the depth and
breadth of her experience and
enthusiasm.”
Hartman and her husband
recently moved to Florence
from the San Diego suburb of
Alpine, Calif., where she was
the choral director and organist
at Christ the King Episcopal
Church in Alpine.
“I’m really enjoying the
friendly openness of the people
here. It reminds me of the small
town where I grew up, and I’m
loving my new job,” Hartman
said.
A versatile performer,
Hartman began piano lessons at
age 5, later adding clarinet,
oboe, string bass, harp and
organ to her repertoire of skills.
Always a singer with her
family choir, she became a
church organist at age 12.
At age 16, Hartman won first
place, piano division, in the
Young Artist Competition of
the Minnesota Music Teachers
Association and won a Dimitri
Metropoulos Scholarship to
Stevens College in Joplin, Mo.
Hartman delighted audi-
ences in the San Diego area for
years with her unique brand of
piano bar entertainment as well
as her acting roles such as the
witch in “Into the Woods,”
Dolly in “Hello, Dolly” and
Bloody Mary in “South
Pacific.”
She has been featured soloist
on piano, harp and voice with
the Tifereth Israel Orchestra,

27, at 6:30 p.m., the communi-
ty is invited to join a group of
people with diverse spiritual
thoughts and paths to discuss
opposing thoughts of war.

Hartman has also been a solo
performer in Europe and

She also enjoys playing
chamber music with talented

Being Earnest,” Vantage
Theater; a cabaret series at
Christ Church Unity; and the
annual Italian Night and
Chamber Music Extravaganza
at Christ the King Church.

the Siuslaw is located at 3996

Rev. Greg Wood is the pastor
and worship services are at 10
a.m. Sundays followed by fel-
lowship hour. The chancel
choir rehearses at 3:30 p.m.
Thursdays and the bell choir
rehearses at 5 p.m. Thursdays.

Advent tradition topic of next UU meeting
Rev. Dr. Ruth Miller will lead the Florence
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship worship serv-
ice on Sunday, Nov. 26, from 10 to 11 a.m.,
where her message title is: “Advent.”
It’s the first Sunday of a Christian tradition
that has evolved substantially over the past sev-
eral hundred years, merging bits and pieces from
many cultures and spiritual paths.
Rev. Miller will help honor the season and see
how and why it is, what it is and discover what
it can be for people seeking to deepen their spir-
itual lives and values.

Each service concludes with refreshments and
a dialogue circle to explore the questions that
