t’s been 25 years since
Alan and Karen Burns
moved from Roseburg
and purchased Riverside
Chapel in 1992. Both
licensed funeral directors,
the Burns wanted to
bring their family-owned,
personal-touch style of
funeral service to Florence.
“Our objective from the
start has been to provide
high quality, compassionate
care for families — and
it has remained our
objective,” says Alan.
To meet the growing
needs of the community
and the ever-expanding
options of funeral services,
the Burns built a new
structure in 2006 that has
allowed Burns’s Riverside
Chapel Florence Funeral
Home to offer an increasing
range of services. These
include custom memorial
arrangements to meet
the special requests or
needs of families, as well
as two crematoriums and
a separate facility for pets
“Our family helping your family
with dignity, respect & integrity.”
that is currently the only
one of its kind on the
Oregon coast.
For more than 30 years,
the Burns have been pro-
viding personal, caring
guidance for families and
individuals in planning
tributes and memorials for
loved ones.
“Our commitment is to
take care of others when
they need it most,” says
Alan. “It’s important to us
to provide other families
kindness and comfort
during what will be one of
the most challenging times
in their own lives.”
That includes 24-
hour availability to the
community, seven days a
week.
“We want people to know
that day or night, they can
reach a real person instead
of an answering machine,”
says Alan. “For us, this is
a calling that requires total
commitment. People who
are grieving want support,
not voicemail.”
Karen says their decades
of experience in serving
families in their time of
need has helped them
understand that each family
and situation is different,
and that taking the right
approach can make all
the difference in guiding
grieving families through
some of the toughest
decisions they may have to
make in their lives.
“We’re compassionate
caregivers because we’re
human,” Karen says. “To
help ease people’s minds
during a difficult time is
why we’re here. It’s why we
do what we do — and why
it’s more than a business to
us.
“It’s a calling.”
