Genealogy enthusiasts discuss Civil War mementos
Siuslaw Genealogy Society
President Mike Allen was also
a presenter at the September
meeting of the genealogy
group. Allen’s program fea-
tured three members telling of
their research on relatives who
were members of The Grand
Army of the Republic. Known
as the GAR, it was a patriotic
organization of veterans who
fought for the Union Army in
the American Civil War. The
organization ceased to exist
when the last member died in
1956.
The Genealogy Society pro-
vides a monthly program on
topics of interest to persons
using genealogy to explore
family history. The public is
invited to these presentations.
The November speaker will
be Kevin Mittge, the Adult
Services Librarian at the
Siuslaw Public Library. Mittge
has been “doing” genealogy for
40 years.
His lecture will discuss
