Book Review
“Empire Made”
By Kief Hillsbery
In 1841, 22-year-old Nigel
Halleck set out for Calcutta as a
clerk in the East India Company.
He went on to serve in the colo-
nial administration for eight
years before abruptly leaving
the company under a cloud and
disappearing in the mountain
kingdom of Nepal, never to be
heard from again.
While most traces of his life
were destroyed in the bombing
of his hometown during World
War II, Nigel was never quite
forgotten — the myth of the man
who headed East would rever-
berate through generations of
his family.
Kief
Hillsbery,
Nigel’s
nephew many times removed,
embarked on his own expedi-
tion, spending decades research-
ing and traveling through India,
Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nepal
in the footsteps of his long-lost
relation. In uncovering the
remarkable story of Nigel’s life,
Hillsbery beautifully renders a
moment in time when the arms
of the British Empire extended
around the world.
Both a powerful history and a
personal journey, “Empire
Made: My Search for an Outlaw
Uncle who Vanished in British
India,” weaves together a clash
of civilizations, the quest to dis-
cover one’s own identity, and
the moving tale of one man
against an empire
Advance reader copies for
library patrons
The library has received a
large number of advance reader
copies (ARCs) and uncorrected
proofs of soon-to-be published
books. The books are available
for library patrons to borrow for
up to two weeks, write a short
review on the attached book-
mark, and give their opinion as
to whether the library should
purchase the book once pub-
lished.
We ask that patrons read,
review and return the books
within two weeks and then
select another one. Though it’s
hard to do, please limit yourself
to one book at a time.
This is a great opportunity to
read a book that is yet to be pub-
lished!
Misinformation, Fake
News and Political
Propaganda Workshop
The Siuslaw Public Library
will be hosting an Adult Civics
workshop on Saturday, Oct. 28,
from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the
Bromley Room at the main
library in Florence.
5 A
This non-partisan workshop,
titled “Misinformation, Fake
News
and
Political
Propaganda,” will be led by
Donna Cohen, a teacher and
librarian, and is designed to
enhance civic knowledge and
inspire political engagement.
Sometimes it is difficult to
sort out truth from fiction in the
overwhelming number of mes-
sages directed at the public by
politicians, news sources and
other media. This workshop
will help participants learn
where to find accurate informa-
tion and distinguish the truth
from fiction by employing criti-
cal thinking strategies.
Real-life examples will be
used to show how information
can be, intentionally or not, dis-
torted. Logical fallacies, politi-
cal ads, news headlines, graphs
and charts, the effect of lan-
guage chosen to express ideas,
and other types of information
will be examined.
Facilitator Donna Cohen is
focused on presenting non-parti-
san civics workshops around
Oregon for adults that fill gaps
in civic and political under-
standing and that encourage crit-
ical evaluation of information.
This free civics workshop is
designed for adults and is open
to the general public.
