With the latest predictions and polls
picking Siuslaw to sweep tomorrow’s
Far West League district titles, the
Vikings have momentum in their favor
to make those predictions come true.
Coupled with some of the fastest
5,000-meter times of the season spread
evenly between the boys and girls line-
ups, it would almost seem a foregone
conclusion.
However, overconfidence has never
been a personality trait of Siuslaw’s
cross country program, which has
always run a humble — albeit winning
— style.
For the boys, sophomore Brendon
Jensen has led the team all season,
including clocking the league’s fastest
5K time of the year (16;46.0). Senior
Isaac Griffes has continued to be a
strong second, with sophomores Jonah
Jarman, Kiger Johnson and Jared

MID COAST LAKES:
Olalla Reservoir has
been stocked with about
100 surplus summer steel-
head from the Siletz Falls
trap, this season. These fish
get fairly active in the lake
and offer a unique fishing
experience.
Once in the lake they are
considered “trout” and do
not require a Combined
Angling Tag. Anglers are
reminded, however, that
only one trout per day over
20 inches may be retained,
and these fish will almost
all be in that size range.
Mid Coast lakes been
stocked with trout through-
out the spring. Trout stock-
ing is over until the fall but
there still should be fish
around to catch. Water
temps are great and fish
should be hungry.

I
t was a long-time coming, at the
very end of what was almost win-
less season for the Vikings football
team last Friday at Brookings-Harbor.
With both teams coming into the
matchup at 0-4 in the Far West League
and 0-7 overall, it was an opportunity
to end the season on a high note — and
Viking seniors Jared Brandt and Trent
Reavis served as composer and con-
ductor for an upbeat swan song.
Not only did the game mark the final
contest of the regular season and the
Viks’ only win, it also represented the
final football game of the Far West
League, which will dissolve next year
following the Oregon Schools
Activities Association’s (OSAA) final
approval of the new 6-classification
system — along with 4A Sky-Em and
3A Umpqua River Conferences, with
Siuslaw moving to the Sky-Em in
2018.
So the Vikings’ win was a particu-
larly sweet note, in a game that was
hard-fought.
Brandt connected on four touch-
down passes in the game, including
three to Reavis and one to freshman
Elijah Blankenship. Reavis also
nabbed a pick and returned it for a
score to help Siuslaw outscore the

tum shifted off course, due in part to
the loss of junior wide receiver Evan
Moso leaving the line-up with a shoul-
der injury. That, coupled with another
starter out of the line-up, left Mapleton
with fewer options and many players
repositioned to fill in the gaps.
“It’s all about execution, and we just
weren’t able to do that effectively after
that,” said coach Jeff Greene. “We
started missing our blocks and things
Things started out well for the
Sailors as they hosted Falls City last
Friday for a chance at the District 3
football championship. Mapleton held
the Mountaineers to just two offensive
possessions in that first quarter, with
senior quarterback Dominic Wells con-
necting on a 30-yard pass to freshman
JJ Neece for a touchdown and 6-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the Sailors’ momen-
went downhill from there.”
Trailing 20-6 by halftime, the
Sailors never saw the end zone again
as Falls City powered its way to a deci-
sive 66-6 win.
The good news is that the Sailors
still have another shot at reaching the
state play-offs — something that has-
n’t been done since 2002.
Friday, Mapleton will host Lowell
(3-2), with the winner advancing into
the first round of the 1A state play-
offs.
