Dawson to speak at museum about local civic history USCG A UXILIARY TEACHES
On Friday, Oct. 27, begin-
ning at 7 p.m. in the upstairs
meeting room of the Siuslaw
Pioneer
Museum,
Rand
Dawson will tell the story of
how
and
why
the
“Retrospective on Community
Action” came together during
the museum’s Story Time.
Dawson’s commitment to
the community is well estab-
lished. He is an activist whose
g r e a t - g r a n d f a t h e r, S . A .
Dawson, was a member of the
Oregon Senate in the 1880s.
Dawson’s most recent gift to
the community is a display of
the dedication this area has
expressed to civic causes in a
special
exhibit
called
“Retrospective on Community
Action.”
This display is now housed
in the Siuslaw Pioneer
Museum archives.
“It was an election year,
2016, a time to celebrate local
people who were addressing
needs and issues that were
important,” said Dawson. With
the help of a few friends,
Dawson made some calls in
search of material evidence of
this great spirit that is so much
a part of Florence — and peo-
ple responded.
The materials poured in and
“represented only a portion, a
small portion, of the communi-
ty engagement across all of
these issues and needs,” said
Dawson. “It really reflects our
community. Truthfully, we

wanted to hold a public party to
re-enjoy these remarkable
efforts and materials together
since many friends are no
longer with us.”
The result was the October
2016 show at the Silver Lining.
People involved in organiza-
tions and activities in the com-
munity offered photographs,
articles and documents.
“Many efforts [that] sought
to directly enrich local life
were highlighted, such as
library expansion, forming
food or art cooperatives, music
events, reduce addiction behav-
iors, or improve access to
affordable housing, or student
text books,” Dawson said.
Many others addressed all
levels of public policy con-
cerns and were seen as contro-
versial.
“This event reprised a rich
swath of local history, allowing
viewers to see or remember
hundreds of events or efforts
arising from their own neigh-
bor's direct engagement in
many aspects of community
life,” said Dawson.
To fill out his presentation
Dawson has invited some of
those “neighbors” to join him
in telling this story of civic
pride: Norma Barton, Pip Cole,
Jeanne
Kimball,
Mark
Chandler, Dave Bellemore,
Craig McMicken, Dick Smith,
Virginia Kelly, Jo Beaudreau,
Mark Tilton, April Dumas,
Joanna Henderson and Mary
Shaw. This will be a rich and
provocative evening of story-
telling.
