On Sept. 19, the Florence Rotary Club was honored to have District 5110 Governor Claudette McWilliams (cen-
ter) present for the meeting, during which Cool at the Coast Golf Co-Chairs Deb Lamb and Craig Sanders pre-
sented Claudette with a check for $4,000 for End Polio Now. Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global
Polio Eradication Initiative nearly 30 years ago, the incidents of polio has been reduced by more than 99.9 per-
cent, from about 350,000 cases a year to just 37 cases in 2016. To sustain this progress and protect all children
from polio, Rotary has committed to raising $50 million per year over the next three years in support of glob-
al polio eradication efforts. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match Rotary’s commitment 2:1.

Dunes City wins prestigious ‘Gold Safety Award’
See Jim for your auto sales needs!
The City of Dunes City
received a well-deserved safety
award at the League of Oregon
Cities annual conference late
last week.
The award, received by
Florence Mayor Joe Henry on
behalf of Dunes City, took
home the Gold Safety Award
for a City in Group 1 (having 1
to 14 employees.)
City/County
Insurance
Services (CIS) presented the
award in recognition of the
city’s good employee safety
record during the 2016-17 year.
The annual CIS/League of
Oregon Cities (LOC) award,
more than three decades old,
rewards cities with the fewest
number of work days lost due
to on-the-job injuries.
It showcases employee safe-
ty, focusing on training, a
proven track record in avoiding
injuries, and management’s
commitment to a safe work
environment.
“At CIS, we've redoubled
our focus on keeping safety
front and center for our work-
ers’ compensation program
members,” said CIS’ Executive
Director Lynn McNamara.
“Our winners are cities that
adopt safe work practices and
make sure those practices are
followed, day in and day out.
“Their commitment and vig-
ilance
produces
results:
employees stay on the job, and
costs stay down.”
“Since I came to work for
the
city,”
said
City
Administrator Jamie Mills,
“the city has updated its
Personnel Policy Handbook,
has instituted quarterly safety
training sessions, has provided
storage for emergency supplies
for each of our staff members,
and has completed a number of
long-standing safety issues in
the form of anchoring shelving,
posting escape routes, provid-
ing emergency lighting, and
other small, yet vital activities.
“I’m pleased that this work
has been recognized beyond
our local area.”

titled “Misinformation, Fake
News
and
Political
Propaganda,” will be led by
Donna Cohen, a teacher and
librarian, and is designed to
enhance civic knowledge and
inspire political engagement.
Sometimes it is difficult to
sort out truth from fiction in the
overwhelming number of mes-
sages directed at the public by
politicians, news sources and
other media.
This workshop will help par-
ticipants learn where to find
accurate information and dis-
tinguish the truth from fiction
by employing critical thinking
strategies. Real-life examples
will be used to show how infor-
mation can be, intentionally or
not, distorted.
Logical fallacies, political
ads, news headlines, graphs
and charts, the effect of lan-
guage chosen to express ideas,
and other types of information
will be examined during the
workshop in a “what do you
see here?/what is missing?”
format.
This civics program will be
facilitated by Donna Cohen.
Both a teacher and librarian,
Cohen is focused on presenting
non-partisan workshops for
adults that fill gaps in civic and
political understanding and that
encourage critical evaluation of
information.
She is actively involved in
various civic/political projects.
This civics workshop is
designed for adults and is free.
Reservations are not required
but seating is limited so plan to
arrive early.
