Fire Prevention Week marks the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of October 8-9, 1871. That blaze,
which raged for several days, claimed more than 250 lives and destroyed more than 17,400 struc-
tures. Like later major fire tragedies such as the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York (145
fatalities) and the 1942 fire in Boston’s Coconut Grove nightclub, leaving 491 dead. The Chicago Fireman
prompted much-needed reform by focusing public attention on fire prevention and fire safety. In 1925,
President Calvin Coolidge declared Fire Prevention Week an official national observance. Therefore,
annually on the Sunday through Saturday period containing the October 9th anniversary of the Chicago
Fire has been focused on fire-safety-awareness, sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA).

When President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week on October 4–10,
1925, he noted that in the previous year some 15,000 lives were lost to fire in the United States. Calling
the loss «startling», Coolidge›s proclamation stated: "This waste results from the conditions which jus-
tify a sense of shame and horror; for the greater part of it could and ought to be prevented... It is highly
desirable that every effort be made to reform the conditions which have made possible so vast a destruc-
tion of the national wealth."[2]

Draw a map of your home. Show all doors and windows.
Visit each room. Find two ways out.
All windows and doors should open easily. You should be able to use them
to get outside.
Make sure your home has smoke alarms. Push the test button to make sure
each alarm is working.
Pick a meeting place outside. It should be in front of your home.
Everyone will meet at the meeting place.
Make sure your house or building number can be seen from the street.
Talk about your plan with everyone in your home.
Learn the emergency phone number for your fire department.
Practice your home fire escape drill!
