County actively preparing for potential employee strike On Oct. 2, Lane County received notice that approxi- mately 650 employees repre- sented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) may strike begin- ning today, Oct. 18, unless a labor contract agreement is reached. “Lane County remains committed to maintaining the highest level of service deliv- ery possible for our communi- ty during a strike,” said Devon Ashbridge, public information officer. “There are some serv- ices that will need to be adjusted if a strike occurs. We L OOKING FOR want our community to know that we are planning carefully in order to minimize the impact to the many people who rely on our services.” Visit www.lanecounty.org for a detailed list of service changes that would be imple- mented if AFSCME employ- ees strike. In the Florence and Mapleton areas, the most direct impact will be in a reduction of hours at Lane County Waste Management, which would be closed Sunday through Tuesday, and open only to commercial dumping Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Public dumping would only be open on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Information will be updated as needed. Community members with questions about affected serv- ices are encouraged to call the hotline at 541-682-3977. The hotline is open between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, until resolu- tion is reached or until the strike ends. Lane County has been working with AFSCME lead- ers since March 1 to come to an agreement on updated terms for a three-year contract (2017-20). The county has made a pro- posal that is similar to con- tracts already accepted by five other employee labor organi- zations at Lane County. While Lane County is com- mitted to reaching an agree- ment that balances providing competitive wages and bene- fits with being responsible stewards of taxpayer resources, it is also actively preparing for a strike. Information about the labor negotiations process itself is available at www.lanecounty. org/contractupdates.
