tor’s Center, 290 Highway 101,
and start hunting for glass
fl oats at 18 participating loca-
tions around Florence. Some
businesses will not be open
Sunday, so be sure to get a
head start!

lorence is the site for the
seventh annual Wine
& Chowder Trail this
weekend, Friday, Oct. 6,
through Sunday, Oct. 8.
Explore tastes of wine and
chowder in Historic Old Town
Florence all weekend. Try nearly
a dozen diff erent chowders while
enjoying live music, shopping
food and beverage. People can
also enter to win a memorable
and collectible glass fl oat. Th e
giveaway will start on Sunday at
3:30 p.m., aft er starting on Friday.
Th e Wine Trail is on Saturday
from 2 to 5 p.m. and the Chowder
Trail is on Sunday from noon to
4 p.m.
“Historically sunny weather,
comfortable temperatures, a bowl
of delicious local clam chowder
and a glass of Oregon wine. Th at’s
what this weekend is all about,”
says Bettina Hannigan, execu-
tive director of the Florence Area
Chamber of Commerce.
Th e Chamber is bringing back
the Great Glass Float Giveaway —
a three-day treasure hunt — for
which participants can pick up
passports at the Chamber’s Visi-
tor Center, 290 Highway 101, on
Friday and Saturday and win one
of 30 beautiful glass fl oats during
the drawing on Sunday. Partici-
pants must be present to win.
New to the event this year is a
concert by legendary Brazilian
jazz percussionist Airto Moreira
and his world-renowned
six-piece band at
the Florence
Events
Cen-
ter.
“Imag-

Hannigan asks.
Saturday, Oct. 7, features the
annual Wine Walk from 2 to 5
p.m. Pick up your wine passport
and commemorative glass for $5
and tasting tickets for $1 each at
Waterfront Wine Store, 1300 Bay
St., to sample wines from 10 dif-
ferent Oregon wineries.
Wine Trail participants must
prove they are 21 or over.

at 7 p.m. Casual listeners and
jazz enthusiasts alike will recog-
nize Moreira’s work.
He is a pioneer in jazz fusion
and world music, has contributed
to major movie soundtracks and
has collaborated with a long list
of iconic players such as Miles
Davis, Chick Corea, Cannonball
Adderly, Quincy Jones, Herbie
Hancock, Carlos Santana, Weath-
er Report and Chicago. Tickets
are $30 and available at Event-

Sunday, Oct. 8, is the Chowder
Trail from noon to 4 p.m. Pick
up your ballot and map for $5 at
Gazebo Park on Bay Street. Th ere
will be 10 locally-made chowders
all around Old Town.
“Two lodgings, Th e River
House Inn and Th e Old Town
Inn, both within walking distance
of the festivities and highly rated
on TripAdvisor, are off ering in-
clusive package rates with a Sat-
urday night stay,” adds Hannigan.
From Friday aft ernoon through
Sunday aft ernoon, participants
can venture in and out of the
myriad shops and galleries in
Old Town, and select locations
around town, in search of about
30 hidden glass fl oats “hidden in
plain sight.”
Once spotted, entrants can tell
the proprietor where they spot-
ted it and have an event “pass-
port” validated to receive a ticket
for Sunday aft ernoon’s drawing.
Th e more fl oats spotted, the bet-
ter each person’s chance of taking
one home during the weekend’s
giveaway.
