Thursday, Siuslaw hosted their neighboring nemesis North Bend (3-1) during a heated exchange of volleys that included no more than a 4- point lead by either team over the course of three sets. The Viks held the lead at chairs or strollers, and walking sticks are suggested. As always, leashed pets are welcome on walks, but bring water and clean up materials for pets. In addition, a sturdy 6-foot leash (not the retractable type) is required. A coach must make game times choices. Spectators don’t. 2. I played that sport, ther- fore I can coach it. Most coaches have playing experience in their chosen sport. There are many posi- tions and skills to learn as a coach. Each sport requires knowledge of these fundamen- tals before a coach can be effective. But a coach needs more than playing experience to coach a sport. In 1977, I was hired as the varsity baseball coach after pitching college ball at Pacific University. Although I was a successful pitcher there, pitchers were often excluded from daily practices. We often ran and lifted weights away from team drills. I had little to no experience on infield or outfield play. The designated hitter limited my hitting and base running skills. From August 1977 until February 1978, I attended four baseball clinics. The knowl- edge I gained helped me teach the fundamentals of baseball. Although my football expe- rience was greater, I missed an opportunity to be the head coach at Central Linn High School because I lacked offen- sive line coaching techniques. Playing is only a small part of coaching. 3. I want to coach my child’s team. A parent coaching most often occurs early in a child’s sporting life. Other par- ents are sure to let you know their child should play more and at what potition. I formed a flag football league for third through sixth grade. Sixteen men showed to be coaches. Each team includ- ed at least one dad as a coach. To balance the experience of coaches, I provided practice plans, playbooks, first-aid kits and rulebooks. Many coaches thanked me for the assistance. Two years later I tried to form a third- through sixth- grade volleyball league. Zero parents showed up. I am glad to see, today, our local Boys and Girls Club pro- viding a variety of sport opportunities for both boys and girls. I coached for more than 30 years. The ages ranged from T-ball through varsity sports. I coached boys and girls in foot- ball, basketball, softball, base- ball and track. Some teams I played on went undefeated; other teams failed to win a game. Gaining confidence and improving the mental and physical skills of children was rewarding. I gave my teams a chance to compete and used my knowledge of any given sport to help prepare them — for athletics and life. Now I play bridge, and there is a rule in bridge that applies to sports: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. I played — and continue to play — to compete. I coached my teams to do the same.
