Sandboarders fly high at Xwest Huck Fest

he annual “Big Air”
sandboard jump com-
petition, the Xwest
Huck Fest, was held once
again at Three Rivers Resort
on Saturday, Sept. 16.
Xwest Custom Clothing
Company has presented the
Huck Fest with professional
and amateur categories since
1998.
Dune Riders International,
the governing body for com-
petitive sandboarding, has
sanctioned the Xwest Huck
Fest for the Sandboard World
Tour, with all points earned in
this competition added to the
world tour points that help
will determine the ranking of
each competitor toward the
world champion title.
There were 10 competitors
taking to the air during this
year’s event, along with
many returning champions.
Florence residents Gabe
Cruz and Matt Walton, both
two-time world champions,
were on hand for the compe-
tition, with Cruz scoring well
by landing all his jumps with
more difficult tricks to earn a
total of 22.5 points — and
this year’s Huck Fest Pro
title.
Junior champion Diego
Chaves of Eugene moved into
the Amateur Men’s division,
even though at age 15 he still
qualifies for the Junior divi-
sion. Chaves showed the

won the Amateur Men’s Division
title during this year’s Xwest
Huck Fest.
crowd just why he opted to move up
into the men’s category with a solid
win for first place and the Amateur
Men’s title.
North Bend resident and newcom-
er Bethany Sewell claimed the top
spot in the Women’s Amateur divi-
sion, sticking a couple of solid land-
ings to narrowly win over Portland
sandboarder Jessica Leuenberger
and Waldport’s, Rose Carter.
“The weather was cooperative and
the athletes couldn’t have asked for
better conditions,” said Lon Beale,
owner of Sand Master Park and
coordinator of the event.

sored by Xwest Sportswear, Three
Rivers Resort, Bi-Mart, Sand Master
Park and Venomous Sandboards.
