10 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2017 Wine, chowder weekend gets jazzier Oktoberfest comes to the FEC “Happy circumstance has just brought together two awe- some events in one weekend,” said Bettina Hannigan, execu- tive director of the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s seventh annual Wine and Chowder Trail weekend is Oct. 7 and 8. On that Saturday night, the leg- endary Brazilian jazz percus- sionist Airto Moreira and his six-piece band will play the Florence Events Center, at 7 p.m. “The two weren’t planned together, but make a great pair- ing,” said Hannigan. “Imagine, a weekend of wine, chowder and jazz. You can see why we call Florence ‘Oregon’s Coastal Playground.’ And his- torically, the weather cooper- ates on the first weekend of October.” The Wine Trail is Saturday, Oct. 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. Participants can pick up a com- memorative wine glass for $5 and tasting tickets for $1 each at Waterfront Wine Store, 1300 Bay St., then stroll Historic Old Town Florence to sample wines from 10 different Oregon wineries. The Chowder Trail is Sunday, Oct. 8, from noon to 4 p.m. Ballots and maps will be available for $5 at Gazebo Park on Bay Street. There will be upwards of 10 locally-made chowders all around Old Town for participants to sample and vote for. Casual listeners and jazz enthusiasts alike will recognize the work of Airto Moreira. He is a pioneer among a select group of elite musicians who contributed to the creation of jazz fusion and world music. Moreira is a founding mem- ber of the original “Weather Report” jazz group and has collaborated with a long list of iconic players such as Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Cannonball Adderly, John McLaughlin, Stanley Clarke, Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Paul Simon, Carlos Santana, The Crusaders, Chicago and Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum Percussion Ensemble. Moreira has also contributed to movie soundtracks like “The Exorcist,” “Last Tango in Paris,” “King of the Gypsies” and “Apocalypse Now.” A portion of the concert pro- ceeds will go to the Siuslaw School District music educa- tion programs. Tickets are $30 and avail- able at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., EventCenter.org or by calling 541-997-1994. All weekend long, partici- pants can venture in and out of the myriad shops and galleries in Old Town in search of hid- den glass floats. The Florence Chamber is “hiding in plain sight” as many as 30 hand-blown glass floats produced by local artisans. Once spotted, entrants can tell the store’s clerk where they spotted a float and have their passport validated. The more a person finds, the better the chance of taking one home. Floats will be awarded on Sunday.
