Storytime coming to
Siuslaw Pioneer Museum
The public is invited to hear
the stories of Tiernan, told by
local resident Carl Mason, on
Friday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m.
Tiernan, which is located
five miles west of Mapleton, is
named after R. Tiernan of San
Francisco, who was leasing a
local sawmill in the area.
Mason grew up in Tiernan dur-
ing the 20s and30s, attended
school in Mapleton and has
many stories to tell of those
early days. Find out more
about the history of this little-
known area in this free event,
located at the Siuslaw Pioneer
Museum, 278 Maple St.

Book Review
“My Mother’s Kitchen”
By Peter Gethers
“My Mother’s Kitchen:
Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner,
and the Meaning of Life,” by
Peter Gethers, is a funny, mov-
ing memoir about a son’s dis-
covery that his mother has a
genius for understanding the
intimate connections between
cooking, people and love.
Gethers wants to give his
aging mother a very personal
and perhaps final gift: a spec-
tacular feast featuring all her
favorite dishes.
The problem is, although he
was raised to love food and
wine, he doesn’t really know
how to cook. So he embarks
upon an often hilarious and
always touching culinary jour-
ney, that will ultimately allow
him to bring his mother’s
friends and loved ones to the
table one last time.
The daughter of a restauran-
teur — the restaurant was New
York’s legendary “Ratner’s”
— Judy Gethers discovered a
passion for cooking in her
fifties. In time, she became a
mentor and friend to several of
the most famous chefs in
America, including Wolfgang
Puck, Nancy Silverton and
Jonathan Waxman; she also
wrote many cookbooks and
taught cooking alongside Julia
Child.
In her 80s, she was robbed
of her ability to cook by a
debilitating stroke. But illness
has brought her closer than
ever to her son; Peter regularly
visits her so they can share
meals and he can ask questions
about her colorful past while
learning her kitchen secrets.
Gradually his ambition
becomes manifest: he decides
to learn how to cook his moth-
er the meal of her dreams and
thereby tell the story of her life
to all those who have loved
her.
With his trademark wit and
knowing eye, Gethers has
written an unforgettable mem-
oir about how food and family
can do much more than feed us
— they can nourish our souls.

John Daniel to
Keynote Florence
Festival of Books
Oregon author John Daniel,
who has just this year pub-
lished the novel “Gifted,” will
be the keynote speaker at this
year’s Florence Festival of
Books on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7
p.m. at the Florence Events
Center.
Daniel has received the
Oregon Book Award for two
prior books, “The Far Corner:
Northwestern Views on Land,
Life”, and “Literature and
Looking After: A Son's
Memoir.”
“Gifted” tells the story of a
young man with a spiritual
imagination and a rare affinity
for wild creatures who comes
of age under harsh circum-
stances, negotiating the wild-
ness of his home country, his
human relationships and the
emerging complexities of his
own being.
While Daniel will be sign-
ing books after the keynote
address, the library also has
copies of all of his books avail-
able to check out.
