Horney leads the Us TOO Florence Prostate Cancer Education/Support Group that meets twice monthly with a urologist at each meeting. Mayor Henry urged all men in Florence to take advantage of the information available at these meet- ings, become aware of their own risks of prostate cancer, talk to their health providers and get screened for the disease. For more information, call Bob Horney at 541-999-4239. OBITUARIES ZECHER—Mel L. Zecher was born to Mary and John Zecher in San Francisco, Calif. He was raised in San Juan Bautista, Calif., and then went to high school in Hollister, Calif. He left high school and joined the military at age 17, serving in the U.S. Navy dur- ing WWII. In 1945, Mel was stationed on a ship off Clipperton Island, protecting the Panama Canal. He was in San Diego, Calif., waiting reas- signment when VJ Day occurred. He returned to San Juan Bautista and married his sweet- heart, Dorothy Abbe, in June 1947. They lived in the San Francisco Bay area. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in San Francisco before learning the floor-covering trade, installing flooring and carpet in homes, office buildings and ships. He and Dorothy raised two children. As an interest he took up scuba/skin diving. He could hold his breath and dive to 60 feet. After Mel retired, he and Dorothy moved to Oregon. He worked in a plywood mill in Medford. Then another interest lead him to secure his pilot’s license. Mel flew private planes all over Soutern Oregon and Northern California. He also took up golf for a few years. He is survived by his son, Rod Zecher of Houston, Texas; WEATHER DATA daughter, Karen Edwards, of Florence; two grandchildren: Dr. Jonathan Zecher of Melbourne Australia and Amanda Zecher of Houston, Texas; and one great-grand- child in Australia. Graveside services will be held at Pacific Sunset Cemetery in Florence on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 1:30 p.m. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
