Siuslaw’s cross country teams chose a different route on Saturday, at least in terms of scheduling, diverting from the Northwest Classic in Eugene to a less smokey course in Coos Bay for the annual Prefontaine Memorial Run. Though it meant giving up a chance to run the same course Siuslaw runners could see at the state meet on the Lane Community College campus later this season, running in the Pre still provid- ed both Viking teams the chance to compete against runners from nearly 20 schools on a course that follows the footsteps of iconic running legend Steve Prefontaine. A total of 191 boys and 142 girls representing 17 schools from through- out the region were on hand for the event, with both Viking teams finish- ing sixth in their divisions. Sophomore Brendon Jensen led the Siuslaw boys with a second personal- best time in four days, finishing the 5K course in 17 minutes, 17.3 seconds for 10th place individually. Viking senior Isaac Griffes was 16th overall with a time of 17:31.0, fol- lowed by sophomore Jared Northrop in 22nd place (17:57.6), senior Jordan Northrop in 30th (18:05.4) See RUNNERS 3B NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS • SEPT. 22 SHS FOOTBALL HOSTS D OUGLAS 7 P . The tournament began with a two- part putting contest. Robert Ybarra and Rick Yecny faced each other in a sud- den-death showdown after both sank putts, forcing a “putt off” to determine the winner. Ybarra took the crown after sinking a second putt, winning $100 and adding his name to the engraved put- S AILORS SACK B Y N ED H ICKSON 148 Maple St. Florence 541-997-3441 ting contest trophy that sits at Ocean Dunes golf Links. James Sangrey had his ticket drawn for the opportunity to sink a 60-foot putt to win $5,000. However, Sangrey’s putt was a little strong, catching the edge of the cup and end- ing just over 20 inches past the hole. The winning team in the Gross Score category was Brian Holmes, Taylor Kauffman, Ron Klampe and Ryan Klampe. First place in the Net Category went to Ron Green, Toby Hanson, Rick Yecny and Lydia Brackney. Closest to the pin winners were Julie Ellingson, John Smrekar and Bob Flowerday. These fish get fairly active in the lake and offer a unique fishing experience. Once in the lake they are considered “trout” and do not require a Combined Angling Tag. Anglers are reminded, however, that only one trout per day over 20 inches may be retained, and these fish will almost all be in that size range.
