Florence Area Chamber of Commerce seeks local photography
The Florence Area Chamber of
Commerce is looking for the best pho-
tos of the fun, frolicking and iconic
buildings and scenery of Florence,
Oregon’s Coastal Playground.
“We call this place Oregon’s
Coastal Playground for a reason,” says
Chamber Executive Director Bettina
Hannigan. “So we’re looking for out-
standing amateur or professional pho-
tos that convey our coastal playground
theme.”
The winner will collect a $250 cash
prize, have their submitted photo fea-
tured in the chamber’s resource guide,
other printed marketing pieces, on the
Foam
website and in social media.
A panel of chamber members will
decide the winner.
“Tourism is our leading industry,
the backbone of our economy and
quality of life. It accounts for 1,300
jobs and $127 million flowing through
our community,” says Hannigan. “The
best photos will express how great a
destination Florence is for vacation-
ing.
“So download your best photos
from you smartphone or camera and
send us your highest resolution photos
showing the best of our area’s scenery,
iconic buildings and natural locations,

from the list of prohibited
items.
Once this decision was
made, there was unanimous
approval for acceptance of
EMAC’s recommendation to
ban PSFs.
The EMAC recommenda-
tion is known officially as
Title 3, Chapter 12, and it
will be presented at an
upcoming, as yet unsched-
uled city council meeting for
consideration.
According to the proposal,
Section 2A would prohibit
any “person, firm, corpora-
tion, partnership, government
entity or other organization”
from packaging, selling or
serving food or beverages in
any PSF container.
If adopted by Florence City
Council, this will ban PSF
take-out
containers
in
Florence.
Section 2D states that “No
person shall possess, use,
carry or improperly dispose
of any PSF container in any
public space, or upon or adja-
cent to any body of water.”

He pointed out the strong
support the proposal received
through the survey.
He also brought the
groups’ attention to a portion
of the proposal that specifi-
cally mentioned “ice chests
and coolers.”
The line comes from a
description of the types of
containers that would have
been prohibited under the
group’s proposal.
Most members of the com-
mittee had originally wanted
to include other PSF products
in the ban, but the concern for
public reaction and the scope
of the proposed ban was a
sticking point for the group.

sion point raised at EMAC’s
August meeting that suggest-
ed the committee was over-
stepping by including the
prohibition of anything other
than food containers in guid-
ance given to Florence City
Council.

Photos from in town, around town
and from the natural areas within 20 to
25 miles of Florence will be eligible.
The contest is open to Florence-area
residents and visitors from all over the
world. Amateurs and professionals
alike are encouraged to enter. Portrait-
oriented photos stand the best chance
of being used in print media, though
landscape-oriented photos are just as
encouraged.
“I especially want to encourage
amateur photographers to enter. We

outdoor activity. These visi-
tors would technically be in
violation of the ban, and sub-
ject to fines.
The penalties for this viola-
tion would be $250 for a first
offense and $500 for a second
offense.
If approved by Florence
City Council, the effective
date for the ban would begin
Jan. 1, 2018. There would be
a three-month grace period
before enforcement begins,
allowing for existing stocks
of PSF containers currently in
use in restaurants to be
exhausted.
EMAC also plans to sug-
gest that Florence City
Council, or its appointee, be
allowed to issue an exemp-
tion to the PSF ban if it
deprives a person of their
legally protected rights.

Deadline for entry is Friday, Sept
29.
The winner will be notified within
seven days by email.
By entering the contest, contestants
state they have ownership and rights to
submit the photo, that the photo is free
of encumbrance by other entities and
give the chamber unlimited rights for
the use of photos in its publicity and
marketing materials.
Entrants do not give up exclusive
rights for future use of the photos for
their own private use. Entrants must
provide signed waivers (photo release
forms) granting the chamber permis-
sion to use the image or likeness of
anyone included in the photo.
Entrants under the age of 18 must
have permission of a parent or
guardian.
