Garden Club kicks off
St. Mary’s to celebrate
50th anniversary jubilee new season with speaker
Saint Mary’s Catholic
Church is inviting the public to
join them for the church’s
Jubilee Mass, which will mark
the parish’s 50th anniversary.
There will also be a celebra-
tory potluck lunch afterwards.
The St. Mary’s Our Lady of
the Dunes parish was founded
Sept. 1, 1967.
Rev. Peter Smith, the auxil-
iary bishop of the Archdiocese
of Portland, will be visiting to
help celebrate the mass.
Other events will include
the unveiling of a new, hand-
carved statue of the Saint
Mary.
In addition, there will be a
charity raffle with various
prizes donated by local busi-
nesses.
There will be games and
activities for children that
attend.
The Jubilee Mass will be
held Sunday, Sept. 10, begin-
ning at 10 a.m.
A pot luck lunch will be
served immediately after the
mass.
For more information, call
the St. Mary’s church office at
541-997 - 2321.
Us TOO discusses
UroLift cancer treatment
Us TOO Florence will be
addressing a benign prostate
condition that affects far more
men than prostate cancer,
namely BPH — enlarged
prostate — on Tuesday, Sept.
12.
More than 70 percent of
men in their 60’s have symp-
toms of BPH, which can be
coincident with prostate can-
cer.
These symptoms include:
frequent need to urinate both
day and night; weak or slow
urinary stream; a sense of not
completely emptying the blad-
der; difficulty or delay starting
urination; urgent feeling of
needing to urinate; a urinary
stream that stops and starts.
As the prostate enlarges, it
presses on and blocks the ure-
thra, causing the above urinary
symptoms.
Medication and surgical
removal of excess prostate tis-
sue, as in TURP, have been the
standard treatment.
Now comes UroLift, a 10-
minute non-surgical procedure
done right in the urologist’s
office.
To learn more about this
procedure from Dr. Bryan
Mehlhaff, who is using this
new procedure, and from some
of the patients who have
received it, attend the Us TOO
Florence meeting from, 5 to 7
p.m.
The meeting will be held at
the Presbyterian Church of the
Siuslaw, 3996 Highway 101.
