the best in the state. The

Taking on the Viking volleyball team
will be a tall order this season. In part
because of the amount of experience
along the netline; and in part because
three of its starters — MaKenzie York,
Emma Collins and Mia Collins — are
all over 6 feet tall.
the third set, 29-17.
Siuslaw rallied to take the fourth set,
25-18, to win the opening match.
Siuslaw had little trouble with
Philomath in the second match, sweep-
ing the Warriors in three straight sets,
25-22, 25-20, 25-20.
Siuslaw will return to the court this
Tuesday to face the Falcons at Elmira,
beginning at 6:30 p.m.

M APLETON : 42 — P ERRYDALE : 52
The Mapleton 8-man football team
kicked off its season on the road at
Amity on Thursday night, where the
Sailors took on Perrydale in a high-
scoring match-up.
Quarterback Dominic Wells rushed
260 yards for Mapleton and scored
three touchdowns while receiver
Nathaniel Neece threw for a 60-yard
touchdown to help the Sailors take an
early lead over the Pirates.
But Perrydale rallied late in the sec-
ond half, overcoming a 42-38 Mapleton

SERVE UP SWEEP
Those advantages were evident dur-
ing the Lady Viks’ opening series
Thursday night in Junction City, with
Siuslaw completing a sweep of both the
host Tigers and visiting Warriors from
Philomath.
In their match against Junction City,
the Lady Viks decisively won the first
two sets, 25-17, 25-18, but was denied
a sweep when the Tigers narrowly won
WEEKLY
lead in the third quarter
to slip by for the win,
52-42.
The Sailors will
return to the gridiron
next Friday, Sept. 8,
when they host Elkton.
Mapleton will have two
away games before
returning to host North
Douglas on Friday,
Sept. 29.
Kick-off for both

MID COAST LAKES
Olalla Reservoir has
been stocked with about
100 surplus summer steel-
head from the Siletz Falls
trap, this season. These fish
get fairly active in the lake
and offer a unique fishing
experience.
Once in the lake they are
considered “trout” and do
not require a Combined
Angling Tag. Anglers are
reminded, however, that
only one trout per day over
20 inches may be retained,
and these fish will almost
all be in that size range.
Mid Coast lakes been
stocked with trout through-
out the spring. Trout stock-
ing is over until the fall but
there still should be fish
around to catch. Water
temps are great and fish
should be hungry, so go
catch them.
SIUSLAW RIVER:

Fishing is starting to
pick up in the bay. There
should be some nice cut-
throat around. Remember
