Alzheimer’s Assoc. to
offer class in Florence
The Alzheimer ’s
Association Oregon Chapter
will hold a free community
education class, “Effective
Communication Strategies,”
from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on
Thursday, Sept. 7, at the
Siuslaw
Public
Library,
Bromley Room, 1460 Ninth
St.
Communication is more
than just talking and listening
— it’s also about sending and
receiving messages through
attitude, tone of voice, facial
expressions and body lan-
guage.
As people with Alzheimer’s
disease and other dementias
progress in their journey and
the ability to use words is lost,
families need new ways to
connect.
Join
the
Alzheimer’s
Association Oregon Chapter to
explore how communication
takes place when someone has
Alzheimer’s, learn to decode
the verbal and behavioral mes-
sages delivered by someone
with dementia, and identify
strategies to help connect and
communicate at each stage of
the disease.
This class is free, but regis-
tration is required.
To register, call 800-272-
3900.
For a full list of upcoming
classes, visit www.alz.org/
oregon.

According to a statement
released by Florence Police
Commander John Pitcher, his
department was contacted
Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 4:29 p.m.
with a report that a vehicle had
run in to the front of Papa
Murphy’s Pizza, 1737 12th St.
Upon arrival, officers con-
tacted the operator of the vehi-
cle, John Hoaks, 74, of
Florence, whose footwear got
caught under the gas pedal. As
a result, the vehicle jumped
the parking stops, and struck
the front of the building, caus-
ing considerable damage.
There were no injuries
reported and no citations have
been issued at this time.
Papa
Murphy’s
Area
Supervisor Wendy Elkins was
at the store at the time of the
accident.
“It happened so quickly,”
she said. “I was behind the
counter and the driver just hit
the curb and drove right into
the front of the store.
Fortunately, he was OK and
nobody else was hurt.”

Anyone driving by the
Florence Habitat for Humanity
(FHFH) homes on Nopal Street
lately may be wondering what
was going on. In this past year,
four homes on the street have
come back to FHFH due to cir-
cumstances that were unfore-
seen by the homeowners.
The process of revitalizing
the neighborhood with the help
of local and out of town volun-
teers, as well as the homeown-
ers in the neighborhood, has
begun.
Alan Bourne, who is one of
many of the volunteers work-
ing on the street, said “With the

The damage to the store is
extensive and Papa Murphy’s
has remained closed since the
accident.
Elkins is hopeful that the
store will be able to reopen
soon, although the timeline
remains unclear.
“We are not open yet and
are not 100 percent sure when
we are reopening, but it won’t
be too long. We will probably
reopen with just drive-up win-
dow service to start when we
do reopen,” she said.
hood everything it was meant

One of the first FHFH fami-
lies that will move there in the
next month or so is the
Pinnock-Davis Family. Parents
Curby and Angela and their
four children (ages ranging
from 8 to l month) are busy
working out their sweat equity
hours that will help them buy
this house from FHFH.
Although Curby works
Monday through Friday locally
while Angela cares for their
children, he can be found most
Saturdays working on the
house with his parents, Cary
and Cheryl.
Many days, he is reluctantly
the last one off the work site
when the doors are locked,
because he is so excited about
owning a home of his own.
When asked how he heard
about FHFH, he said a friend of
Angela’s had an application but
decided not to apply. When she
asked if the Pinnock’s wanted
to take the application, Curby
said, “Of course” when he
heard he would be getting a
refurbished house on Nopal
Street and not a brand new
house somewhere in the com-
munity.
He added that he had mixed
feelings until he found out the
move-in date “jumped 365
days ahead” with these homes
on Nopal.
Curby said he has loved
working with the volunteers
and his family members to
make this house their home.
“This FHFH home is a bless-
ing and a dream come true; we
have been renting forever,” he
said. “We are so excited to be a
part of this neighborhood
where we already know some
people.”
The public can support the
work of FHFH by joining in the
BeachWalk annual fundraiser
on Saturday, Sept. 9, to provide
more decent homes for people
who live in Florence.
For more information, con-
tact Linda Stent at 541-844-

The public is encouraged to
participate in this free event by
attending one of two sessions:
from 7 to 8 a.m. or noon to 1:30
p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13,
at the Florence Events Center.
Mayor Joe Henry will facili-
tate.
During the September town
hall, PeaceHealth leaders will:
• Provide a provider recruit-
ment update
• Discuss recent initiatives
focused on community benefit
• Host a question and answer
segment
Community members are
encouraged to submit questions
before the event on the
Facebook event page at face
book.com/peaceharbor or by
emailing PublicAffairsPHOR

Participants also are wel-
come to submit questions dur-
ing the event.
“Since January 2016, we
have succeeded in matching
more than 6,000 community
members with newly recruited
primary care providers,” said
Rick Yecny, chief administra-
tive officer, Peace Harbor
Medical Center. “Our hope is
to continue demonstrating our
commitment to serving our val-
ued community members and
meeting
their
healthcare
needs.”
