Beyond Earth
By Charles Wohlforth and
Amanda Hendrix
In “Beyond Earth: Our Path to a
New Home in the Planets,” from a
leading planetary scientist and an
award-winning science writer,
comes a propulsive account of the
developments and initiatives that
have transformed the dream of
space colonization into something
that may well be achievable.
We are at the cusp of a golden
age in space science, as increas-
ingly more entrepreneurs — Elon
Musk, Richard Branson, Jeff
Bezos — are seduced by the com-
mercial potential of human access
to space.
But “Beyond Earth” does not
offer another wide-eyed technolo-
gy fantasy: instead, it is grounded
not only in the human capacity for
invention and the appeal of adven-
ture but also in the bureaucratic,
political and scientific realities
that present obstacles to space
travel — realities that have ham-
pered NASA’s efforts ever since
the Challenger disaster.
In “Beyond Earth,” Charles
Wohlforth and Amanda R.
Hendrix offer groundbreaking
research and argue persuasively
that not Mars, but Titan — a moon
of Saturn with a nitrogen atmos-
FOR
phere, a weather cycle and an
inexhaustible supply of cheap
energy, where we will even be
able to fly like birds in the mini-
mal gravitational field — offers
the most realistic and thrilling
prospect of life without support
from Earth.
Donations for book sale
needed
The Friends of the Library will
be holding their next book sale on
Labor Day weekend and they are
seeking donations.
Please bring any unwanted
books or other materials to the
library’s circulation desk.
The Friends sales help support
the library in many ways, from
helping with the costs of putting
on programs to helping purchase
new furniture and equipment.
Your donation to the Friends
goes a long way towards helping
the library continue to provide
excellent service to district resi-
dents and visitors.
Mapleton Branch
The Mapleton library is located
at 88148 Riverview Ave. in the
Lion’s Club Building. With a nice
view of the Siuslaw River, it’s a
wonderful place to sit and enjoy a
good book or read the newspaper
or use the Internet.
Hours are Tuesday through
Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.
Borrowing material from
other libraries
Do you ever need a book or
other material which we don’t
have here at the Siuslaw Public
Library?
You can always ask if we can
order it on “interlibrary loan.”
Interlibrary loan is a system
where we search for the material
at other libraries and request to
borrow it for you. Books are usu-
ally the easiest to borrow.
Many libraries have restrictions
on lending audiovisual materials
such as DVDs, videos, and
recorded books, as well as special
collections such as genealogy or
local history, but it’s always worth
a try to see if we can borrow it.
The next time you need some-
thing just stop by the reference
desk and we will see if we can
help you out.
Mark your calendars
Four Shillings Short, a hus-
band and wife musical duo return-
ing to Florence after several years
absence, will be performing their
combination of Celtic, folk and
world music in a concert at the
library on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 6
p.m.

upcoming Library Tidings.
