Pedestrian Enforcement
Kid’s Art Camp held at ‘The Studio’ in Old Town
Operation underway
On Wednesday, Aug. 23,
the
Florence
Police
Department will conduct a
Pedestrian
Enforcement
Operation at Highway 101
and 15th Street, from 9 a.m.
to 1 p.m.
It will be canceled if it is
raining.
Under Oregon law, a cross-
walk exists at any public
street intersection, whether
marked with paint or
unmarked. Crosswalks also
exist between intersections
(mid-block) where indicated
with white paint.
At a traffic signal, drivers
must:
• Stop and remain stopped
for pedestrians until they
have cleared the lane in
which the driver is traveling
and the adjacent lane.
• Stop and remain stopped
for pedestrians until they
have cleared the lane into
which the driver’s vehicle is
turning and at least 6 feet of
the adjacent lane.
At any other crosswalk —
those without a signal —
drivers must:
• Stop and remain stopped
for pedestrians until they
have cleared the lane in
which the driver is traveling
and the adjacent lane.
• Stop and remain stopped
for students crossing (or
about to cross) a street under
the direction of a crossing
guard.
• Stop and remain stopped
for a blind or blind and deaf
pedestrian using a cane or a
guide dog, until the pedestri-
an is completely across the
roadway.
A stopped car may be a
clue that a pedestrian is cross-
ing. Don’t pass until you
know what is going on. In
fact, it is not only unsafe but
also illegal in Oregon to pass
a vehicle stopped at a cross-
walk for a pedestrian.
Giving pedestrians more
space and slowing down in
their presence can save lives.
Pedestrians struck by vehi-
cles at 40 mph have an 85
percent chance of dying in the
collision. That death rate
drops to 15 percent at 20
mph.

Recent Siuslaw High School graduate Ben Cahoun led the first ‘Kid’s Art Camp’ this month at The Studios at Jayne
Smoley Design. “We were so pleased to have Benjamin at The Studios to teach the Kid’s Art Camp. It was an
amazing success. I really enjoyed watching him interact with the kids. Teaching them that art is not this big scary
thing, it’s just about problem solving and getting your thoughts and ideas out of your head and onto paper using
charcoal, paint, glue foil and even glass,” said Smoley. “We are already thinking about and planning what we can
do next year.”
Siuslaw Outreach Services host ‘After Hours’
In July, Siuslaw Outreach
Services (SOS) hosted the
Florence
Chamber
of
Commerce’s Business After
Hours.
The event was an opportuni-
ty for the SOS Board of
Directors to introduce new
Executive Director Bob Teter.
Nearly 70 individuals had an
opportunity to find out more
about SOS’s mission and serv-
ices. Last year, SOS served
2,956 individuals with services
such as: advocacy for victims
of domestic violence or sexual
assault; financial assistance for
those who are behind in rent or
utilities due to an unexpected
crisis; clothing, food and
raingear for the homeless;

The highlight of the evening
was an announcement from
Teter that the “Over The

began in May, had exceeded its
goal of $10,000 by more than
double the amount.
The final tally came to
$21,000. This included two
checks from the Florence
Unitarian Universalist
Fellowship totalling $6,632.
The campaign, inspired by
an anonymous donor, was
designed to provided resources
