HOF
from 1B
establishing the HOF nearly a
decade ago.
“Pound-for-pound,
this
school has been as competi-
tive as any school in the state
of Oregon,” Johnson said
from the podium overlooking
this year’s inductees, family
members and alumni.
Johnson then introduced
Perkins as the first inductee of
the evening.
“I have never been around
anyone with more ethics, pro-
fessionalism and vision,” he
said of Perkins, who served as
a counselor, teacher and
coach at Siuslaw beginning in
1997. He eventually became
the school’s athletic director
and was instrumental in estab-
lishing the Siuslaw Athletics
Boosters during a time when
budget cuts threatened many
of the school’s sports pro-
grams.
He became its president
despite retiring in 2007 and
played an influential role in
the creator of the Hall of
Fame in 2011.
“No one in my time here
has had a bigger impact on
athletics at Siuslaw,” Johnson
said.

After taking to the podium,
Perkins, in his quiet manner,
explained that he was blessed.
“I had the great fortune of
working with administrators
who supported me and were
willing to take risks in order
to make things better,” said
Perkins, who then quoted
Ralph Waldom Emmerson:
“There is no limit t what
can be accomplished when we
don’t care who gets the cred-
it.”
Perkins was the first of
seven individuals and three
teams to be inducted during
Saturday’s ceremony, held at
Three Rivers Casino Resort.
Ray Hines, class of 1948,
was honored posthumously
by the committee and mem-
bers of his family.
Hines played basketball,
football and competed on the
track team, helping it to win
the “B” division champi-
onship in 1947. He made two
appearances at state, includ-
ing on the second-place team
in 1948.
He joined two of his chil-
dren, Wes Hines (class of
1971) and Kristi Hines
(Robinson, Class of 1984).
Other inductees for the
class of 2017 included:
• Dick Hoberg (1968): A
four-year athlete at Siuslaw
who finished his career by
going undefeated on the
wrestling mats at 168 pounds
he senior year. He nabbed his
fourth varsity letter, second
district title and first state title
along the way that year.
He also played fullback and
defensive end for the Vikings
football team.
“Pound-for-pound,
this school has been
as competitive as any
school in the state of
Oregon.”
— Chris Johnson, SHS Athletic Direcor
• Rich Ross (1984): He was
a three-sports athlete his jun-
