Discover Native American flute at Starlight Cabaret
Florence Unitarian
Universalist Fellowship, at
Highway 101 and Heceta
Beach Road, presents two
Native American flutists dur-
ing Starlight Cabaret on
Saturday, Aug. 19.
Nathalie Picard-Hatch and
Dennis “dg” Hatch will per-

doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Tea and coffee will be pro-

Picard-Hatch is a Huron-
Wendat flutist, composer,
singer and storyteller who has
been playing flute for 30
years. She also sings tradi-
tional Huron-Wendat songs.
She recently moved to
Reedsport,
Ore.,
from
Wendake (Huron village),
Québec, Canada, where she
studied music at the Music
Conservatory of Quebec City
and completed her degree in
Music at University of
Montreal in Canada.
Picard-Hatch was invited to
play in Toronto for the Prince
of Wales for a special evening,
played in Ottawa for the 2008
Canada Day Concert repre-
senting First Nations of
Florence ORganizes
to explore ‘fake news’
Florence ORganizes pres-
ents the film “Merchants of
Doubt” on Monday, Aug. 14,
at 5:30 p.m.
Covering the topic of “fake
news,” the film explores how
misinformation is spread,
delaying progress on impor-
tant issues facing America.
A potluck will be held dur-
ing the screening, with the
organizers requesting partici-
pants bring a dish, dessert or
drink to share with guests.
The event is free of charge,
but donations are accepted.

the
Florence
Unitarian
Church, located on Highway
101 and Heceta Beach Road.

Dennis Hatch and Nathalie Picard-Hatch will play traditional and newer songs on native
flutes during Florence Unitarian Universalist’s Starlight Cabaret on Saturday, Aug. 19.
Canada, toured with National
Arts
Center
Symphonic
Orchestra in Ottawa and
British Colombia and has
recorded for films and for dif-
ferent singers.
She also specializes in latin
jazz and played transverse
flute with Yoël Diaz’s Cuban
jazz band in Montreal for over
10 years.

Hatch has been a wood-
worker for over 30 years, and
is a member of the Crane Clan
of the Sault Ste. Marie,
Michigan Chippewa Indian
Tribe (Anishinabe).
He has been making Native
flutes for about 20 years. He
also makes and plays Native
American Woodland flutes,
traditional rattles and carves
wood, antler and stone.
Hatch primarily builds all
his flutes using his solid bore
method (unlike most native
flutes that are made in two
pieces then glued together, he
designs his in one solid piece),
which creates a seamless and
smooth finish inside and out.
He may design a flute using
a single type of wood or mix-
ing woods to include on-lays,
inlays or end-caps for design
and function.
An example of function
would be inlaying a different
wood or other material such as
obsidian or quartz as the split-
ting edge to produce a warm,
brilliant
and
responsive
sounding flute.
Various materials included
in his flutes are domestic/
exotic woods, turquoise,
metal, wooly mammoth or
walrus ivory in his designs.
“The nice thing about the
Native Flute is that anyone
who has the will to play, can,”
Hatch said. “Through the use
of the native flute, individuals
can go to that peaceful place
where they can create wonder-
ful things in their lives.”
