Siuslaw News
I
t was a fitting tribute when, in
February 2016, the Siuslaw
Watershed Council (SWC) named
Shiloh Sundstrom as its “Spirit of the
Siuslaw” award recipient posthumous-
ly.
Sundstrom, a Deadwood resident
and Mapleton High School graduate
who earned a masters degree in forest
resources
from
Oregon
State
University in 2009, dedicated much of
his time to the watershed over the years
before a tragic hit-and-run accident
took his life at age 34 two years ago.
As an intern with the SWC in 2006,
Sundstrom began the Salmon Run 5K
as a fund raiser for its watershed pro-
grams, particularly its summer camps

RUN 2B
Hole-in-one could win new Mustang this weekend
If a shout goes up at Ocean Dunes on
Saturday, Aug. 5, it could echo all the
way to Bay Street — because it could
mean that someone hit a hole-in-one on
the eighth hole.
If that happens, one lucky golfer at
Rotary’s eighth annual Cool at the
Coast golf tournament will be the
proud owner of a brand new 2017
Mustang.
The last hole-in-one at Ocean Dunes
occured May 29, according to course
manager Bob Rannow. So it does hap-
pen, with or without the Mustang
incentive.
That prize, sponsored by Three
Rivers Casino Resort, is just one of
many available at this year’s tourna-
ment. Other hole-in-one prizes await
on the fourth, 12th and 16th holes
including a flat-screen TV and a Visa
gift card.
There are also trip prize drawings.
Tickets are already on sale and will be
available at the tournament. Winning
ticket holders will enjoy either a week’s
getaway at San Diego Country Estates
or a two-night stay with a round of golf

COOL 2B
Olalla Reservoir has
been stocked with over 50
surplus summer steelhead
from the Siletz Falls trap,
so far this season. These
fish get fairly active in the
lake and offer a unique
fishing experience.
Once in the lake they are
considered “trout” and do
not require a Combined
Angling Tag.
Anglers are reminded,
however, that only one
trout per day over 20 inch-
es may be retained, and
these fish will almost all be
in that size range.
Mid Coast lakes been
stocked with trout through-
out the spring. Trout stock-
ing is over until the fall but
there still should be fish
around to catch. Water
temps are great and fish
should be hungry, so go
catch them.
SIUSLAW RIVER: Trout
Trout season is open and
there should be some nice
cutthroat around.
Remember the limit on
streams and rivers is two
per day over 8-inches.
ALSEA RIVER: Trout
Trout season is open and
there should be some nice
cutthroat around.
Remember the limit on
streams and rivers is two
per day over 8-inches.
SALMON RIVER: Trout
Trout season is openand
there should be some nice
cutthroat around.
Remember the limit on
streams and rivers is two
per day over 8-inches.
SILETZ RIVER:
Steelhead, Chinook, trout
The Siletz River opened
for wild Chinook on April
1 (1 per day and 2 per sea-
son). Spring Chinook and
summer steelhead are
being caught, and fishing
should continue to
improve. Recycling hatch-
ery summer steelhead from
the Siletz Falls trap has
ended for the season.
Casting spinners, drifting
bait or using a bobber and
jig can be effective.
Trout is season open.
Remember the limit on
streams and rivers is two
per day over 8-inches.
WILSON RIVER:
Steelhead, Spring Chinook,
trout
Spring Chinook fishing
has been slow on the
Wilson.
Summer steelhead fish-
ing has picked up a bit on
