From left: Jared Northrop and Caleb Hennessee, both of
Florence, could advance to the Babe Ruth World Series
later this month.
Florence residents Caleb Hennessee and Jared Northrop
are local Babe Ruth baseball players on the South Coast
All-Stars team. After winning the state championship two
weeks ago, the team advanced to the Babe Ruth Regional
Championship in Kelso, Wash., last weekend for a chance
to reach the Babe Ruth World Series in Tennessee later this
month. The regionals included teams from Oregon,
Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Canada.
The team lost 2-0 in the semi-finals.
Run

for kids — hands-on experi-
ences that introduces them to
the area’s ecosystem, wildlife
and the importance of conser-
vation.
The run lasted three years
before trickling off after
Sundstrom went to college.
A little over a year ago,
while accepting the “Spirit”
award on behalf of his son,
Johnny Sundstrom challenged
the board to start the run again.
“The board thought it was a
great idea to get that tradition
going again,” said Tom Burke
of the SWC.
Before long, Burke and a

Cool
from 1B
at Pumpkin Ridge.
The resort at San Diego
Country Estates is nestled
peacefully in the foothills
near Ramona, Calif. Golfers
will enjoy the chance to play
whenever they choose, and
there is also tennis, horse-
back riding and the nearby
wild animal park, where visi-
tors can get up close and per-
sonal with giraffes and ele-
phants.
And of course the
Southern California wine
country is just adjacent.
Pumpkin Ridge features
two championship golf
courses situated on pristine
farmland only 20 miles west
of Portland. Lush stands of
towering trees frame undulat-
ing fairways and manicured
greens, creating a stunning
tapestry for respite, relax-
ation and adventure.
This year’s Cool at the
Coast is nearly sold out.
According to co-chairs Craig
Sanders and Deb Lamb, only
one team space remains.
“We’ve developed a repu-
tation for good golf and great
fun,” Lamb said. “That’s why
people are signing up earlier
than ever this year.”
Golfers who have not yet
registered should call 541-
997-3232, or visit www.cool
atthe coast.com to download
the registration form.

a decade earlier in an effort to
retrace the route Sundstrom
established and keep it as close
to the original as they could.
Unfortunately, they discov-
ered that road closures and

the same route, but the council
kept it as close as possible.
Though there have been some
changes to the original route, it

track, where Shiloh spent a lot of
time as both a high school athlete
for the Sailors as well as an assis-
tant track coach for his father,

In addition to the 5K run, there
is also a 3K fun run/walk.
Last year’s revival of the race
drew 74 participants, with those
finishing in first place in each
division receiving a handmade
commemorative wooden
medal.
This year, organizers of the
Salmon Run hope to increase
that number to 100 or more.
Cost is $20 for the 3K or $25
for the 5K event for those who
preregister anytime before
tomorrow, Aug. 3. Cost includes
a commemorative T-shirt.
Registration fees will increase
by $5 for both races starting

“It means a lot to see so
many people turn out for this
event,” Johnny Sundstrom said
at the start of last year’s run.
“Shiloh believed in giving
back, and having this race up
and running again in his mem-
ory and raising money for con-
servation education and proj-
ects is a wonderful way of con-
tinuing his legacy.”
