Art event
An evening of ‘Wallflowers and Wine’ returns to FEC
For those seeking a night of art, wine
and shared experience, the FEC’s
Galleries will host the ever-popular
Wallflowers and Wine event with artist
John Leasure on Friday, Aug. 11, from
6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Leasure will once again bring his artful
experience and sense of fun to the stage
at the FEC to lead this social-style art
class as he guides participants through
the process of creating their own paint-
ing based on his theme for the evening.
Cost is $45 and all supplies, including
paint, brushes and canvas, are provided.
The Friends of the Events Center
Gallery Committee will provide snacks
and a complimentary beverage from the
bar for artists to enjoy.
In addition, Pavilion Catering will
also offer a selection of wine, beer and
other beverages for purchase throughout
the evening.
The first coins were made of elec-
trum, an alloy of silver and gold. It
appears that many early Lydian
coins were minted by merchants as
tokens to be used in trade transac-
tions. The Lydian state also minted
coins, most of the coins mentioning
king Alyattes of Lydia. Some Lydian
coins have a so-called legend, a sort
of dedication. One famous example
found in Caria reads “I am the
badge of Phanes.”
Even today, it is still unclear who
Phanes was.
For anyone who is new to coin
collecting, or who has never been to
a major coin show, here are a few
tips to make the show more enjoy-
able:
Though this event has sold out,
tickets can be purchased for futu-
rue W&W events at the FEC box
office, 715 Quince St., or by
phone at 541-997-1994 during
regular business hours.

“Beachcombing Sandpipers,” by
award-winning Florence artist John

next Wallflowers and Wine art event
this August at the FEC.
• Plan to arrive early in the day
rather than later. This will allow
plenty of time to look at all the
exhibits and talk with dealers.
• Bring a good coin guide with
prices for reference. There will be
many coin dealers at the show. Find
out who can offer the best value by
having the current pricing chart
handy and visible.
• Bring a notebook or use the
memo function in your smart phone
to keep track of contact information
for dealers you may want to contact
again in thefuture.
The show will be held Saturday,
Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and
Sunday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. Admission is free to the public
and coin appraisals will be available.
