Book review
“The Family Gene: A Mission
to Turn My Deadly Inheritance
into a Hopeful Future” by Joselin
Linder is a gripping medical mys-
tery that opens a window onto the
exploding field of genomic med-
icine.
When Linder was in her 20s,
her legs suddenly started to swell.
After years of misdiagnoses, doc-
tors discovered a deadly blockage
in her liver.
Struggling to find an explana-
tion for her unusual condition,
Linder compared the medical
chart of her father — who had
died from a mysterious illness 10
years prior — with that of an
uncle who had died under simi-

47 METERS DOWN – One Week Only
PG-13 89 MIN – Shark Attack! “A smart, tense
nail-biter that’s bound to leave some clinging to
the shoreline this summer.” NYDN
and had finally confirmed that 14
of Linder’s relatives carried
something called a “private muta-
tion” — meaning that they were
the first known people to experi-
ence the baffling symptoms of a
brand new genetic variant.
Here, Linder tells the story of
their gene: the lives it claimed
and the lives that advances in
genomic medicine still have a
potential to save.
Digging into family records
and medical history, conducting
interviews with relatives and
friends, and reflecting on her own
experiences with Dr. Seidman,
Linder pieces together the lineage
of this deadly gene to write a
gripping and unforgettable explo-
ration of family, history and love.
A compelling chronicle of sur-
vival and perseverance, “The
Family Gene” is an important
story of a young woman reckon-
ing with her father’s death, her
own mortality and her ethical
obligations to herself and those
closest to her.

Terra Nova Trio
On Saturday, July 29, begin-
ning at noon, the library will
present the Terra Nova Trio in a
free concert.
The trio consists of musicians
Annalisa Morton, Mike Curtis
and Sandy Holder. Offering a
fresh vision of concert program-
ming, the Terra Nova Trio is a
new ensemble with players from
the Eugene Symphony and the
Oregon Bach Festival.
With their traditional classical
instruments (oboe, bassoon and
piano), they bring Bach and mod-
ern French composers to life.
With their popular instruments
(sax, guitar and accordion) they
generously mix in klezmer,
tango, blues and exotic originals.
The result is a satisfying new
world of possibilities. Don’t
miss this wonderful day time
concert open to the general pub-
lic.
Get ready for the total
solar eclipse
Dr. James Brau, from the
Department of Physics at the
University of Oregon, will be
speaking at the library on
Saturday, Aug. 5, at 1 p.m. Brau
will discuss “Total Solar Eclipse
2017: When? Where? Why? and
Safety Precautions.”
He will provide all the infor-
mation necessary to view and
understand the event.
The library will have special
eclipse viewing glasses available
for attendees of the program, as
well as for patrons who cannot
come to the program.
This program is co-sponsored
by the Adult Continuing
Education Series at Lane
Community College in Florence.
Annual backpack giveaway Sunday
Round Room LLC, the
nation’s
largest
Verizon
Authorized Wireless Retailer,
has announced that its TCC
and Wireless Zone stores are
donating 172,000 backpacks
full of school supplies to
ensure children across the U.S.
are well prepared for the start
of the school year.
Students in Florence can
benefit from the giveaway
Sunday, July 23, during the
School Rocks Backpack
Giveaway.
Since 2013, TCC has donat-
ed more than 500,000 back-
packs filled with supplies to
ensure children are well pre-
pared for the start of the school
year.
Between 1 and 4 p.m., fami-
lies can bring their children to
the store to pick up a backpack
filled with pencils, paper, a
pencil box, folders, glue and
more.
“This is our fifth TCC
School Rocks Backpack
Giveaway, and we are ecstatic
to bring Wireless Zone on
board to assist in supporting
the education of young chil-
dren in our communities,” said
Scott Moorehead, CEO of
Round Room, parent company
of TCC and Wireless Zone.
“We are proud to help our local
families prepare for the
upcoming school year by tak-
ing some of the financial bur-
den off their shoulders.”
Nearly 1,000 participating
TCC and Wireless Zone stores
across the U.S. are inviting
local families and their chil-
dren to visit select locations to
pick up a backpack.
One backpack per child
present will be given away on a
first-come, first-served basis
while supplies last.
The Florence store is located
at 2775 Highway 101.

Each participating TCC
store will donate 220 back-
packs. Any leftover backpacks
will be donated to local
schools.
In 2016, the National Retail
Federation predicted the aver-
age person with children in
grades K-12 would spend
$107.76 on school supplies,
which has increased from last
year’s prediction of $97.74.
With nearly 20 percent of
children in the U.S. living in
poverty, TCC is working to
alleviate the rising costs of
school supplies through this
annual program.
TCC continues to make
ongoing investments through
its Culture of Good movement.
Earlier this year, TCC donated
supply packs to more than
5,610 teachers across the U.S.
and 3,000 care kits to senior
living communities.
