SOS to host Chamber Genealogical Society discusses DNA, Ancestry.com
Business After Hours
Florence Area Chamber of
Commerce invites the public
to the Business After Hours
event on Thursday, July 20, at
Siuslaw Outreach Services
(SOS), 1576 12th St., from
5:15 p.m. to 7 p.m.
During the event, SOS’s
board of directors will intro-
duce the new executive direc-
tor, Bob Teter, and celebrate
the successful completion of
their recent Rainbow Fund
matching campaign with spe-
cial check presentations.
“This spring we were
approached by an anonymous
community member who was
concerned about homeless
youth. The project was
designed to raise funds to get
kids into homes, get them help
with their education and den-
tal needs, and provide access
to cultural enrichment pro-
grams,” Teter said.
Recently,SOS received a
matching donation challenge.
If SOS raised $5,000 the
donor would match the total.
That $5,000 matching check
will be presented at After
Hours .
Also on that evening, the
Florence Unitarian Universal-
ist Fellowship will present
SOS with a check from its
quarterly collections.
Chamber
Executive
Director Bettina Hannigan,
says the Business After Hours
social events offer members
and the public valuable net-
working opportunities.
“Every one of our After
The Siuslaw Genealogical
Society is pleased to host
speaker Linda Forrest, dis-
cussing “Autosomal DNA:
Understanding and Using Your
Ancestry.com Results,” on
Wednesday, July 19, at 7 p.m
in the Bromley Room of the
Siuslaw Public Library, 1460
Ninth St.
DNA has spurred great
interest in finding “ethnic”
roots or matching with rela-
tives. There are advertisements
for these DNA tests at
Ancestry.com, among other
companies.
Hours events is beneficial to
businesses and the public in
some way,” says Hannigan.
“This one has the extra benefit
of celebrating success and
compassionate contributions
that demonstrate what an awe-
some community we live in.”

Marianne Brisbane will
cater the event and beverages
will be available.
If your autosomal DNA
results are ready (or almost
ready) at Ancestry.com, this
class will help you make sense
of the results using the tools
and information available at
Ancestry.com.
Forrest will cover a variety
of topics and tools necessary to
make full use of this informa-
tion.
The speaker began her
genealogical journey in 1999
when an aunt sent her a book
she had written about her fam-
ily. That led to an introductory
class with the Oregon
Genealogical
Society
in
Eugene. Soon, Forrest found
herself helping with society
projects and serving on com-
mittees.
Currently, she is treasurer
and journal editor for the soci-
ety.
Forrest’s foray into genetic
genealogy began with her hus-
band’s Y-DNA test in 2007, as
previous efforts to research his
paternal line had failed. Test
results showed that his father’s
original surname was not
Forrest.
By 2012, autosomal testing
made it possible to identify his
ancestors and connect with liv-
ing cousins.
Now, Forrest regularly
teaches classes on genetic
genealogy to help others up the
steep learning curve.
The Siuslaw Genealogical
Society is a local organization
founded in 1982, committed to
helping others research their
family history. Iy is a spon-
sored organization of the
Siuslaw Public Library.
