The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir
By Jennifer Ryan
Through letters and journals,
The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir by
Jennifer Ryan unfolds the strug-
gles, affairs, deceptions and tri-
umphs of a village choir during
World War II.
As
England
becomes
enmeshed in the early days of
World War II and the men are
away fighting, the women of
Chilbury village forge an
uncommon bond.
They defy the Vicar’s stuffy
edict to close the choir and
instead “carry on singing,” res-
urrecting themselves as the
Chilbury Ladies Choir.
This story tells the home-front
struggles of five unforgettable
choir members: A timid widow
devastated when her only son

of a local scion drawn to a mys-
terious artist; her younger sister
pining over an impossible crush;
a

Czechoslovakia hiding a family
secret; and a conniving midwife
plotting to outrun her seedy past.
An enchanting ensemble
novel that shuttles from small-
town intrigue to romance to the
heartbreaking matters of life and
death, Jennifer Ryan’s debut
thrillingly illuminates the true
strength of the women on the
home front in a village of
indomitable spirit.
Wildlife of the Dunes
The library is pleased to pres-
ent local author and Oregon
Dunes enthusiast Dina Pavlis

the library’s Bromley Room.
Spanning more than 40
miles, the Oregon Dunes
boast over 400 species of
wildlife, according to Pavlis.
Attendees will learn about
the birds and animals of the
dunes.
Participants will receive
information about how to
volunteer for dunes restora-
tion projects and threatened
species protection efforts in
the Siuslaw Region.

Controlling Invasive
Weeds in the Dunes
The Wildlife program will
7 A
be followed at 3 p.m. by a work-
shop of the Oregon Dunes
Cooperative Weed Management
Area, teaching attendees how to
identify, report and control non-
native invasive weeds in or near
the dunes.
The workshop will cover
potential invaders and existing
weeds and why it is important to
stop the invasive weed invasion.
Both programs are free and open
to the general public.
Covered bridges of Oregon
Jerry Russell from the
Covered Bridge Society of
Oregon will be at the library on
Saturday, July 15, at 1 p.m., dis-
cussing the covered bridges of
Oregon.
Russell is a state expert in
covered bridges and Oregon fea-
tures the largest collection of
them in the West.
The heyday of covered bridge
building in Oregon occurred
between 1905 and 1925 when
there were an estimated 600 cov-
ered bridges in the state.
By 1977, this number had
dwindled to 56. The Society, of
which Russell is the vice-presi-
dent, works to ensure that
Oregon’s covered bridges will be
preserved for future generations.
Members work with legisla-
tors, local governments, news
organizations and historical soci-
eties to provide funding, mainte-
nance and protection to save the
state's roofed bridges.
