workshop offered July 8
For those who weren’t able
to get into the free press
release wrtiting workshop
offered June 24, a second
workshop has been scheduled
for July 8, from 10 to 11:30
a.m.
During the workshop led by
Siuslaw News editor Ned
Hickson, participants will
learn the proper formatting of
press releases, including ele-
ments of Associated Press
style that are utilized by media
outlets around the world.
The workshop will cover
what to include in a press
release as well as what to leave
out; effective press release
structure; standard photo for-

how to contact media outlets
and which formats are pre-
ferred by editors when receiv-
ing submissions.
The workshop, sponsored
by Siuslaw News and Port
Hole Publishing, will be held
at the Port Hole Publishing
office, 179 Laurel St., in Old
Town Florence.
Though the workshop is
free, pre-registration is appre-
ciated by emailing nhickson@
thesiuslawnews.com.

SWC to recieve Fish Creek project grant
The Oregon Watershed
Enhancement Board (OWEB)
awarded $162,300 to the
Siuslaw Watershed Council
for the Fish Creek Large
Woody Debris Placement
Project at their April 24-26,
2017 board meeting.
“This project will greatly
increase the quantity and qual-
ity of Coho winter and sum-
mer rearing habitat through
the addition of large wood

throughout three miles of Fish
Creek,” says Eli Tome,
Siuslaw Watershed Council
Restoration Projects Manager.
The project will add
approximately 450 pieces of
large woody debris to three
miles of Fish Creek.
The addition of large wood
will help catch gravels and
improve stream habitat for
Coho salmon. The project is
expected to begin in the fall of

Funding for grants award-
ed by the OWEB Board
comes from three primary
sources – the Oregon Lottery,
Salmon License Plate rev-
enues, and Federal Pacific
Coastal Salmon Recovery
funds.

that people can take part in.

only this day is all about vol-
unteering and giving back.”
The Power of Florence day
is filled with different
fundraisers and service proj-
ects that the community is
welcomed and encouraged to
join.
The morning will start with
a Free Pancake breakfast host-
ed by Florence Unite

“Power” walk through Old
Town with Mayor Henry com-
plete with a Florence Police
