Special event
Oregon Cavy Breeders Show returns
If you’re a fan of Guinea pigs or
cavies, this show is for you.
The Florence Events Center will
be alive with the happy, un mis-
takable squeal of Cavies (Guinea
pigs) and their enthusiasts when
the Oregon Cavy Breeders
Society hosts its Cavy Show on
Saturday, July 29, at the FEC,
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cavy owners and breeders from
around the region will bring their
favorite cavies to be judged and
assessed for their quality.
Top winners will be awarded
prizes. In addition there will be a
free youth cavy show open to the
public.
Everyone is invited to see some
of the most beautiful cavies in the
Northwest.
A wide variety of cavies will be available during

Peruvian and Sheltie (aka Silkie) ence:
• Short Haired: The short coated
breeds are those most frequently seen
of hair
• Peruvian: The Peruvian is the
progenitor of all modern long-
haired breeds, being a Guinea pig
with hair that grows long continu-
ously all over its body — some-
times to an excess of 20 inches.
• Silkie or Sheltie: A Silkie has
long hair that flows back over its
body and never forward over the
face (as in the Peruvian).
• Texel: Like a Silkie, but with
curls.
The show will be a unique
opportunity to see and interact
with the many breeds of this popu-
lar animal, as well as see what
determines the best of the best in
the eyes of professional breeders.

Relay For Life venue changes to Florence Events Center
When this year’s annual Relay For
Life fund raising event for the
American Cancer Society takes place
in Florence, the event will see a few
changes — beginning with a new
venue at the FEC rather than Miller
park.
In addition, rather than an overnight
event, it will be held from noon to mid-
night, with registration beginning at 10
a.m.
Scheduled for Saturday, July 22, the
event will officially kick off at noon by
celebrating everyone who’s been
affected by cancer during a special
Survivor’s Walk.
Whether someone’s been diagnosed
for 10 days or been cancer-free for 10
years, they gather together for the
crowd to cheer them on.
Survivors define courage and
inspire those facing a cancer diagnosis.
Their strength is honored with each
step they take around the first lap. If
you know anyone who’s overcome
cancer, invite them to join.
Laps by teams or individuals raising
funds for cancer research will continue
throughout the day, along with other
special events leading up to the
Luminaria Ceremony at 9:30 p.m.
Each Luminaria bag represents a
loved one lost to cancer, brings sup-
port to those affected by it, and honors
survivors. This powerful moment gives
people the opportunity to grieve but
also offers hope and comfort.
Finally, at 11 p.m., the closing cere-
mony will begin.
During that time, participants will cel-
ebrate together what this year’s relay
has accomplished together while also
remembering those we’ve lost.
Come to this year’s Relay For Life
and join others in the Florence com-
munity who will be taking action to
help end the pain and suffering of can-
cer.
collectors event
Coin show is for collectors as well as the curious
At the 19th annual Coin and Stamp
Show, nearly 50 vendors from Oregon,
Washington, Idaho, California and as far
away as Connecticut will be exhibiting,
trading and selling coins from around
the world. On hand will be U.S. territo-
rial gold coins, as well as coins from
Greece, Italy, the Middle East and more.
For anyone who is new to coin col-
lecting, or who has never been to a
major coin show, here are a few tips to
make the show more enjoyable:
• Plan to arrive early in the day rather
than later. This will allow plenty of time
to look at all the exhibits and talk with
dealers.
• Bring a good coin guide with prices
for reference. There will be many coin
dealers at the show. Find out who can
offer the best value by having the cur-
rent pricing chart handy and visible.
• Bring a notebook or use the memo
function in your smart phone to keep
track of contact information for dealers
you may want to contact again in the
future.
The show will be held Saturday, Aug.
19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday,
Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is free to the public and
coin appraisals will be available.

The Van Fans annual Ice Cream
Social fundraiser will bring Florence res-
idents and Van Fan members together
for an afternoon of ice cream, pie and
other treats while supporting the Cancer
Van for the Florence community.
The social will take place Saturday,
July 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $5
and will be available at the door. There
will be homemade pie and ice cream
served by BJ’s Ice Cream, with hot and
cold beverages available.
The Friends of Florence Van Fans, a
non-political volunteer organization, is
sponsoring this event. All proceeds
donated go to support the van that
transports cancer patients daily to
Eugene and Springfield for radiation
treatment. This service is free of charge
to the community. Come and spend a
relaxing afternoon enjoying pie and ice
cream and listening to music, while
helping a fellow neighbor or friend in
need.
