a female Chinook salmon.
Jagoe created the “BE the
whale” project to raise aware-
ness of endangered species
nationwide. Alicia Hoxie of
Reno High School in Nevada
received a scholarship in
November of 2016 for her
charcoal, pencil, watercolor
and pastel drawing of a Mount
Charleston Blue Butterfly.
Zoey Zhao from Tuscon,
Ariz., received a scholarship in
May 2016 for her colored pen-
cil drawing of a baby Ocelot.

Great Florence Duck Race.
The race is held to raise funds
for local scholarships and
grants for non-profits. The
Great Duck Race will be held
on July 4, at 1 p.m., on the
boardwalk at the Port of
Siuslaw Marina by ICM.

receives 10 percent of the fund-

whale project. The funds will
be distributed to classroom

Deadwood
Pioneer
Cemetery has been awarded
$5,860 from the Oregon Parks
and Recreation Department’s
Historic Cemeteries Grant
program. This money will be
used to buy 35 headstones to
place permanent markers on
known graves that are
unmarked or temporarily
marked in the Deadwood
Pioneer Cemetery, located just
off Highway 36 on Deadwood
Creek Road.
The markers will be flat
gray granite, custom-engraved
stones, 16 inches by 8 inches
by 3 inches.
The list of names whose
markers will be ordered
include: Almasie, Bear, Beers,
Burnett, Gallup, Leep, Light,
May, Monroe, Rust, Scoggins
and Wills.
“We would like to be in
contact with family members
to confirm engraving before
placing the order,” said
Deadwood Pioneer Cemetery
Secretary Megan Gerber.
“People who are possibly
related to these family names
are asked to contact me direct-
ly as soon as possible; we’d
like to place the order by July
3.”
