An evening with HAL 9000 and ‘Space Odyssey’
City Lights Cinemas is will
present the seminal science fic-
tion classic “2001: A Space
Odyssey.”
This space epic covers
everything from science, reli-
gion and humanity. To help the
audience get the most from the
screening, the film’s most
memorable character, HAL
9000, will be onstage talking
about the making of the film,
the current state of artificial
intelligence and the evolution
of simple computers to self
conscious beings.
The performance is on
Sunday, June 25, at 3 p.m.
“2001: A Space Odyssey”
was first announced in 1965
when the space race was in full
steam as President John F.
Kennedy set the nation’s sites
on the moon. If Hollywood
was to go to space, it had to be
as real as possible.
Stanley Kubrick partnered
with the writer Arthur C.
Clarke to craft a story that
could withstand the march of
progress. It was a process that
involved NASA, IBM, TWA
and more than 50 companies
including hundreds of aeronau-
tics specialists, astronomical
artists and technicians.
From iPads to Alexa, Space-
X to Skype, almost every
important
technological
advancement in the last 50
years was inspired — either
indirectly or directly — by
Kubrick’s film; while Kubrick
used science as a blueprint to
make the film, science used
2001 as a blueprint to make the
world.
Before the film, HAL 9000
will talk about the complex
issues surrounding it. Watch
the masterpiece on the big
screen — the way it was meant
to be seen.Followeing the film,
HAL will be available for a
Q&A.
