The Boston Red Sox took their con-
tinued interest in Siuslaw High School
alumni and Beavers pitcher Jake
Thompson a step further Tuesday,
when the Major League Baseball team
drafted the red shirt junior during the
fourth round with the No. 131 overall
pick.
Thompson, a 6-foot-2 right-hander,
has received national attention for his
performance in Oregon State
University’s pitching rotation this sea-
son, where he is 14-0 with a 1.52 ERA
— with the Beavers headed to the
College World Series.
Thompson was recently named a

first-team All-American by Baseball
America and Collegiate Baseball.
Though he still has a season of eli-
gibility remaining with the Beavers,
Thompson will likely sign with the
Red Sox.
A Florence native, Thompson is
currently ranked fifth in the nation
after throwing 113 strikeouts and
just 36 walks in 118 1/3 innings.
So far this season, batters have hit
.184 against him in 18 appearances.
According to one MLB scout,
Thompson’s ability to throw break-
ing balls for strikes, seemingly at-
will, is a big enticement.
That’s “Probably the most impres-
sive thing I’ve seen him do, and he
can do it at any time,” he said.

regular season this year.

Thompson’s no-nonsense pitch-
ing style has served him well as he
has developed his ability in tandem
with growing confidence — ele-
ments that came together and pro-
pelled him to a new level this sea-
son.
As a freshman, Thomspon had 14
appearances for the Beavers, includ-
ing a start in the 2014 NCAA
regionals before missing most of the
2015 season with a back injury.
“I didn’t really have the mindset
to attack hitters and know what to
T HOMPSON
throw hitters and how to make small
adjustments throughout the game,”
Thompson said of his early outtings
for the Beavers. This season, however,
Thompson said his mental approach
and physical tools finally came togeth-
er.
The reported potential earnings for
Thompson in the MLB 131st selection
is an annual salary of $397,800.
In 2013, the Chicago Cubs picked
Thompson on the 34th round of the
MLB draft, but Thompson opted not to
sign in order to continue his develop-
ment and pursuit of a business degree.
Thompson was one of three OSU
players drafted this week, along with
right-handed pitcher Drew Rasmussen
and first baseman KJ Harrison.

This past Wednesday, Siuslaw head football coach Jamin Pool (right center), along with assistant coaches and
members of the Viking football team, were on the practice field for the first day of summer training camp. The
Vikings’ weight training camp begins Monday, June 19, and will run through June 22. Yesterday, the Vikings
were on the road at Toledo High School for a 7-on-7 scrimmage. In August, the Vikings will host their annual
Siusalw Football Camp for kindergarten through eighth grade.
Steelhead, Chinook, trout
The Siletz River opened
for wild Chinook on April
1 (1 per day and 2 per sea-
son). Spring Chinook and
summer steelhead are
being caught. Drift boaters
are having success from
Moonshine Park to Siletz
and bank anglers are catch-
ing hatchery fish in the
Siletz gorge.
Casting spinners, drift-
ing bait or using a bobber
and jig can be effective.

WILSON RIVER:
States close sturgeon season early on Columbia
On Thursday, Columbia River fish-
ery managers closed one recreational
white sturgeon season and scheduled
another.
Higher than expected effort and
catch prompted fishery managers to
close the sturgeon season planned for
today from the Wauna power lines
downstream to the river mouth.
Recreational anglers exhausted
their harvest quota of 3,000 legal-
sized sturgeon during the first five
days of this fishery, with about 12,000
angler trips expected.
Fishery managers also set a one-day
sturgeon retention season for Friday,
June 23, in the mainstem Columbia
from Bonneville Dam upstream to
The Dalles Dam, including adjacent
tributaries.
Anglers who haven’t met the annu-
al bag limit will be allowed to keep
one sturgeon with a fork length of 38-
54 inches.
Anglers are reminded that sturgeon
fishing is prohibited through July
within the sturgeon sanctuary from
The Dalles Dam downstream 1.8
