There was also a table full of
homemade baked goods that
included cookies, cakes and
loaves of bread.
The winner of the raffle won
a two night stay at the pictur-
esque Heceta Head Bed and
Breakfast Inn, just north of
town.
“I want to thank all of the
people and businesses who
donated items for the auction,”
Marohl said. “We had some
really great items for people to
bid on and there was something
for everyone. I also want to
thank everyone who came to bid
on items. Many of the bids were
extremely generous with items
selling for well over the valued
price.”
Shannon Graham, a teacher at
Siuslaw Elementary School, has
been a driving force in the effort
for Malakai, and was extremely
pleased at the results.
“The Gifts of the Heart was a
complete success. More than
500 people attended the auction
and we raised a total of
$30,8866! The Siuslaw Valley
Firefighter Association donated
$500 and brought a ladder
truck,” Graham said.
The donations went beyond
items and food for people to
buy.
Graham
listed
Siuslaw
Elementary Kindness Club
members, who volunteered to
sell Italian sodas and cremosas
and raised more than $100, and
Craig’s BBQ food truck, which
served meals and donated half
the profits to Malakai.
Graham said, “Craig’s raised
a total of $211 at the auction,
but have decided to carry on the
special for the entire week at
their food truck (at Maple Street
and Highway 101). And they
will continue donating $5 for
each cheeseburger basket they
sell during the next week.”
Dozens of volunteers assisted
with the table set up and the
pricing of donated items before
the event, staffing the tables
during the auction and assisting
with the cleanup after the auc-
tion was over.
According to Graham, there
were many hands involved and
that made the afternoon easier
for all involved.
“On behalf of the auction
steering committee, we would
like to express our sincere
appreciation to each and every
person in our community who
volunteered, donated and
attended the auction,” Graham
said. “What an incredible
impact you have made on
Malakai’s family, not only mon-
etarily but also emotionally.
People really gave from their
heart from the start to the finish
of this event. What a blessing it
is to be a part of this communi-
ty!”
People dressed as Star Wars
characters, including Storm
Troopers, Darth Vader and Luke
Skywalker, attended the event.

Happy Fathers Day!
1. Heat gas or charcoal grill. Cut 4 (18x12-inch) sheets of heavy-duty foil. Place salmon piece on center of
each sheet. Brush 1/2 tablespoon oil over both sides of each salmon piece. Sprinkle each piece with 1/8
teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Place about 3 lemon slices fl at or overlapping on each piece.
2. Bring up 2 sides of foil over salmon so edges meet. Seal edges, making tight 1/2-inch fold; fold again,
allowing space for heat circulation and expansion. Fold other sides to seal.
3. Place packets on grill over medium-low heat. Cover grill; cook 13 to 16 minutes, rotating packets 1/2 turn
aft er about 7 minutes, until salmon fl akes easily with fork.
4. To serve, cut large X across top of each packet; carefully fold back foil to allow steam to escape. Sprinkle
with parsley.
Furnishings for the new
Public Works building, cur-
rently under construction at
the corner of 27th and
Kingwood streets, for a not-
to-exceed price of $89,725,
was also approved.
The council also approved
a bid from Sierra Santa Fe
Corporation of $75,863 to
perform a Chip Seal/Fog Seal
and MicroCoat application to
extend the life of pavement
along Oak Street, north of
35th Street.
Public Works Director
Mike Miller said, “It is like
putting suntan lotion on the
street. It extends the life of
the pavement.”
Miller said this would be
the fourth sealing project the
city has done.
Before closing the meet-
ing, Mayor Joe Henry
thanked City of Florence
staff for the work done to
develop the biennial budget.
