City Lights to screen silent classic ‘Dr. Jekyll’
The silent film classic “Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” along
with musical accompaniment
by the Texas band The
Invincible Czars, will be
screened at City Lights
Cinemas on Monday, June 12,
at 6 p.m.
“Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”,
one of the first truly great hor-
ror films, helped revolutionize
cinematic effects.
Accompanying the film will
be the Austin Texas band The
Invincible Czars coming to
town to provide the films score
live.
It is often misstated that
1927’s The Jazz Singer was the
first sound picture. That’s not
even remotely true. Thousands
of sound films had been made
before then, traversing the
American landscape with road-
shows to get people interested
in the technology.
Audiences? They hated it.
They viewed filmgoing as
something completely different
than what we know it as today.
Back then, cinema was a par-
ticipation event.
Watching a silent film with a
live musician takes the audi-
ence beyond just presenting a
score to a film.
The musicians are watching
the audience just as much as
the film itself. They take cues
from the audience, watching to
see how each scene and musi-
cal choice affects them.
If a scare doesn’t work the
first time around, they’ll make
the next moment 10 times
creepier. If a joke falls flat, the
next one will be punctuated
with a hilarious sound effect.
Silent film isn’t a passive
artform, and they are never
actually silent.
“It’s a rare moment when
you get to instantly alter what
Hollywood is presenting to you
through the conduit of a mas-
terful set of musicians,” said
Jared Anderson of City Lights.
“It’s film. It’s theater. It’s
music. It’s art. It’s every piece
of artistic expression combined
into one beautiful, communal
experience.
“It’s cinema at its best.”
The Invincible Czars have
performed at hundreds of these
shows across the country over
the years and they take silent
cinema to a whole new level.
“They’ve got a full band,
live sound effects — the whole
works,” said Anderson. “It’s an
extraordinary experience.”
Tickets for “Dr. Jekyll and
Mr. Hyde” are currently avail-
able at City Lights Cinemas or
online at citylightscinemas
.com.
Tickets are $15 for adults,
$10 for members, and $5 for
students.
