Southern Oregon sopho-
more and Siuslaw High School
alumni Joseph Dotson gave an
All-America effort May 26 at
the midway point of the NAIA
Outdoor Championships.
Competing in SOU’s only
finals of Day 2, Dotson
jumped three spots in the final
decathlon discipline for run-
ner-up honors with 6,732
points.
Dotson, who last year
placed fifth in the decathlon,
started the day in ninth place.
On the comeback trail he
established new personal bests
in the 110-meter hurdles
(16.20) and the javelin throw
(162-0), and posted qualifying
marks in the discus and pole
vault.
The clincher for Dotson was
the 1,500-meter finale. In fifth
place and 122 points behind
second, he made up 125 points
with a time of 4:22.18 — a PR
by more than five seconds.

2017 Salmon Run to host kick-off meeting
The Salmon Run, a 5K run
and 3K walk, will be held again
this year on Saturday, Aug. 26.
Organizers are looking for
interested persons and volun-
teers to assist with this effort.
A kick-off meeting will be
held Thursday, June 8, from
5:30 to 7 p.m., at the Siuslaw
Watershed Council conference
room, 10868 East Mapleton
Rd., in Mapleton.
This run commemorates
Shiloh Forest Sundstrom
(1981-2015), a PhD candidate
in Geography at Oregon State
University, cattle manager at
Rock Creek Ranch in
Deadwood, a Program Director
at the Siuslaw Institute and a
vocal advocate for conserva-
tion solutions in the Siuslaw
watershed and abroad.
While working for SWC 11
years ago, Sundstrom created
The Siuslaw Salmon Run as a
fun and fundraising event. With
the encouragement of his fami-
ly, SWC revived the run last
year in his honor as The
Salmon
Run/Walk
and
Celebration.
Last year, there were 74 par-
ticipants.
The goal for 2017 is to have
more than 100 entrants.

event or call 541-268-3044 for
