Van Fans seek drivers
The Friends of Florence, a
501(c)3 nonprofit organiza-
tion, is in need of volunteer
drivers.
The only requirement is
drivers must have a clean driv-
ing record and be under the
age of 80.
Friends of Florence drivers
provide free transportation,
Monday through Friday, for
cancer patients seeking treat-
ment in the valley. Drivers
usually only drive one day
each month.
For more information or to
volunteer as a driver, call 541-
997-8663.
Ambassador from 1A
Bones has been volunteer-
ing for so long that his mem-
ories of Florence are exten-
sive. He has some particular-
ly memorable stories.
“It’s extremely difficult
choosing just one favorite
memory from 50 years of vol-
unteering, but my first
thought is about helping
Kaylee Graham with Power
of Florence by working with
the American Legion to clean
up the sidewalk across from
the Veteran’s Memorial
Wall,” he said.
Typically, Bones has taken
the latest praise and directed
it towards encouraging others
to also volunteer.
“Giving back and helping
others is a very rewarding
experience in itself, besides
helping our community look
good and prosper,” Bones
said. “There are many oppor-
tunities for everyone to vol-
unteer in our community. Do
your part, volunteer.”
“In addition to his ongoing
years of service in the role of
an ambassador to our city,
Mike has served on numerous
boards and helped our com-
munity in a variety of ways,”
Foglio added.
Bones was selected as the
2005 Florence First Citizen, a
title granted to an individual
who has given selflessly to
the community, based on
community
involvement,
leadership
and
overall
impact.
When asked about this lat-
est recognition, Bones was
hesitant to accept any praise.
“It’s a very humbling and
great honor to have been cho-
sen. I was raised in this car-
ing community. Giving back
by volunteering is a way to
show that appreciation,
besides making me just plain
feel good,” he said.

Wheel
from 1A
A second name was pulled,
and once again it wasn’t
West.Again, the person had
already left.
West’s patience paid off.
“I was literally the very last
person left who got to audi-
tion,” she said.
West’s journey to appear on

“Wheel” continued a couple of
weeks later when organizers
contacted her to say she had
made the final cut.
She was invited to a second
set of auditions in Portland.
The audition in Portland also
went well, and West received a
letter and phone call a few
weeks
inviting
her
to
Hollywood to appear for real
on her favorite game show.
“I am a real game show lover
and a dreamer who believes in
a Cinderella story,” said West.
“I have always watched game
shows, particularly ‘The Price
is Right’ and ‘Wheel of
Fortune.’ I’m older than both
shows, so I have watched them
as long as they have been on
television.”
Producers of “Wheel of
Fortune” tape six shows in a
day, so 18 actual contestants
and two alternates are there for
the filming of the show.
West had no reservations
about the costs associated with
the appearance. As a faithful
viewer, she knew that all con-
testants on “Wheel” receive a
cash prize, regardless of how
well they do.
“If you are a contestant you
are guaranteed to walk out of
there with $1,000, and a lot of
people probably think of that as
travel money, I know we did,”
she said.
West
ultimately
won
$22,665 and a trip to St. Martin
for her efforts — and a memo-
ry that will last forever.
“It was the opportunity of a
lifetime,” she said. “About
10,000 people a year audition
for ‘Wheel’ and only about 600
are picked to appear. I feel real-
ly lucky to have been one of
those people.”
