Florence Veterans of
Foreign Wars and
American
Legion
annually plan the
Memorial Day cere-
mony at Veteran’s
Memorial Park. The
area also honors vet-
erans by placing flags
and
crosses
at
gravesites. This year,
Florence Boy and Cub
Scouts assisted

Perhaps the highest profile
event of the weekend was the
floating of wreaths to honor
the fallen on the Siuslaw
River Monday afternoon.
Hundreds turned out for the
ceremony, which was organ-
ized by Florence VFW
Chapter 3232 and American
Legion Post 59, and held at
Veteran’s Memorial Park on
Bay Street.
Jim Swant, an active mem-
ber of VFW 3232, said the
turnout for the wreath dedica-
tion was broad based.
“We had good representa-
tion of all the services there,”
Swant said. “The program at
the park is mainly coordinated
by our local American Legion
post and they get other service
organizations involved. They
also contact local vets to let
them know how they can par-
ticipate.”
There were a number of
wreaths that were dedicated to
specific individuals that had
died while serving. The cere-
mony acknowledged each
name.
Then, the wreaths were
turned over to members of
U.S. Coast Guard Station
Siuslaw River to be released
on the Siuslaw River.
The Coast Guard slowly
and respectfully motored to
the center of the river and
stood at attention and saluted
before
gently
releasing
wreaths into the water.
A veteran played “Taps”
while those on shore stood at
attention.
Another tribute to veterans
took place on Saturday morn-
ing at the Pacific Sunset
Cemetery on Highway 126.
One of the new aspects of
this event was the participa-
tion of local Boy Scouts and
Cub Scouts in the distribution
and placement of crosses and
flags on the final resting
places of approximately 500
veterans.
According to Swant, groups
have considered the inclusion
of scouts into Memorial Day
ceremonies for some time, but
this was the first year that the
cross placement was held on
Saturday, when school was
not in session.
“I was pleasantly surprised
at the response we got from
the young people, with about
20 of them showing up to
help,” Swant said. “This is the
first year we have done this
and we are going to try to
continue this in the future.
“We want to involve the
youth in our community so
they can learn about the flag

Langborg commented on
the excellent support SVFR
received from its sister
agencies in the suppression
effort and highlighted their
contributions to getting the
blaze under control.
“At 7 p.m., the situation
and service and why it
is important to remember the
sacrifices that others have
made so they can be free.
It is kind of a real life history
lesson for them. They
responded in a great way, by
helping out and learning what
it means to serve and sacrifice
for this great country of
ours.”
The holiday that we have
come to know as Memorial
Day has been around in one
form or another since 1886.
The current incarnation of this
day of national observance
was ratified by Congress in
was stable enough for
SVFR to withdraw and we
turned the entire incident
over to ODF,” he said.
The
blaze
involved
approximately 20 acres, but
Langborg said the fires
were adequately suppressed
and there were no injuries
sustained or damage to
structures or equipment.
1967 and officially
became a national
holiday when it
took effect in
1971.
Memorial Day,
held
the
last
Monday in May,
recognizes those
who have given their life in
service to their country.
Veterans Day, Nov. 11, honors
all veterans who have served
or are currently serving the
country in the military.
