Alzheimer’s Association Florence Rotary donates to SHS Interact Club
to offer class June 5
Alzheimer’s Association
Oregon Chapter will be hold-
ing an education class,
“Dementia Conversations,”
from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Monday,
June 5, at the Siuslaw Public
Library in the Bromley Room.
The library is located at
1460 Ninth St.
This class is designed to
help attendees discuss with
family challenging and often
uncomfortable topics that
surround Alzheimer’s and
dementia.
Join
the Alzheimer’s
Association meeting and
learn some tips for breaking
the ice with family about this
often misunderstood condi-
tion.
This class will help partici-
pants to address some of the
most common issues of this
illness.
These will include going to
the doctor for a diagnosis or
medical treatment, deciding
when to stop driving and
making legal and financial
plans for future care.
This class is free, but regis-
tration is required.

WLCF awards $38,500 for 2017 senior scholarships
Western Lane Community
Foundation has awarded 23
scholarships totaling $38,500
to deserving seniors both at
Siuslaw and Mapleton High
Schools this year.
On May 25, Arlis Ulman,
Pat Stewert and WLCF
President Cindy Forsyth pre-
sented the 2017 scholarships at
the annual Night of Excellence
held at Siuslaw High School.
New this year is the Dr.
Brittany
Hartzell-Baguley
Memorial Scholarship, which
is a $2,500 each for four years
award to a Siuslaw graduate
with at least a 3.25 GPA and
who demonstrates need, partic-
ipation in school and commu-
nity activities, and shows that
he or she has the ability to
overcome significant obstacles
and challenges. The first recip-
ient of this outstanding scholar-
ship opportunity is Cecilia
Mans (U of Idaho).
The following scholarships

Rotarians Kevin McMullen,
Katie Prosser and Kim
Erickson recently presented the
Siuslaw High School Interact
Club with a check for $300 to
be used for upcoming service
projects.
The check was in recogni-
tion for assistance with this
year’s annual Rotary Club
Auction and Dinner held
March 11 at the Florence
Events Center.
Eighteen students participat-
ed in the event, which raised
$115,000 for community sup-
port projects and scholarships.
Interact members helped with
packaging auction items, man-
aged the dessert auction and
provided support wherever
needed to make the event a suc-
cess.
Interact is a Rotary-spon-
sored service club for students
ages 14 to 18. The club gives
students the opportunity to
serve their community, develop
leadership skills and develop
initiative while making new
friends.

Black Scholarship was present-
ed to Gabriel Wells (LCC/

Andrew Rannow (LCC/
OSU) received the Cocciolo
Family Scholarship of $500 for
four years, Nikki Launius
(Linn Benton) was awarded the
Roger and Sherrie McCorkle
$500
Scholarship,
and
Alexander Osbon (LCC/
SOCC) earned the Willard
Myers $500 electronics schol-
arship.
Dana Halverson (LCC)
received the $1,500 Joe and
Pearl Ellingson scholarship and
Claire Waggoner (George Fox)
was awarded the Marteen Wick
Memorial Scholarship for
being
crowned

There
were
three
Beachcomber
Community
Scholarships this year: $2,000
each to Benjamin Cahoon
(George Fox) and Carissa
Oliver (U of Colorado) and a
$1,000 scholarship to Habana
Ramos (George Fox).
These scholarships were
made possible by the wonder-
fully generous bequests of past
and present individuals and or
families in this community.
The scholarships represent
the WLCF’s ongoing mission
of investing in Western Lane
Community’s youth by encour-
aging and supporting their
desire to further their educa-
tion.
Congratulations to all of
these fine young men and
women.

People can register June 12
for September book festival
The
annual
Florence
Festival of Books, a book fair
for authors and publishers,
will take place Friday and
Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30.
The event is hosted by the
Friends of the FEC and the
FFOB planning committee.
Now in its seventh year, the
book festival continues to be a
popular gathering for authors,
publishers and potential future
authors. The public is invited
to this free event to meet the
authors and have their books
signed.
The book festival will fea-
ture
several
publishers.
Writers are invited to bring
their manuscripts for a chance
to meet with publishers repre-
senting many genres: fiction,
nonfiction, memoir, children’s
literature, fantasy, mystery,
young adult, poetry and more.
John Daniel, winner of the
Pacific Northwest Booksell-
er’s Association Book Award,
will be the guest speaker.
There will also be a meet-
and-greet and special author’s
panel.
