SVFR and WLAD join
for inter-agency training
Western Lane Ambulance
District (WLAD) and Siuslaw
Valley Fire and Rescue
(SVFR), recently joined with
medical staff at Regency
Florence Rehabilitation Center
to practice a real-time cardiac
arrest patient, interagency
training drill.
According to the American
Heart Association, cardiac
arrest is reversible in most vic-
tims if treated within a few
minutes.
It’s critical to recognize the
symptoms and act quickly and
appropriately.
“Training and events like
these are key in developing
relationships and skill sets in a
pre-hospital emergency set-
ting,” said Matt House,
WLAD Operations Manager.

Rehabilitation Centers, partic-
ularly in situations that call for
cardiac arrest resuscitation.
Minutes prove to be criti-
cal when it pertains to restor-
ing a heartbeat in these cases.
A cardiac arrest patient
requires great CPR and early
defibrillation, in addition to
other advanced cardiac life
support such as airway sup-
port, IV access, cardiac media-
tions and transport to the hos-
pital emergency department,
if necessary.
“These life-saving efforts
involve exceptional teamwork,
demanding that the local first
responder agencies work in
unison.
“Team training exercises
such as these, are the keys to
success which, in the end,
lead to saving lives,” House
said.
On Wednesday morning, the
U.S. Coast Guard placed a fog
horn on the tip of the Siuslaw
River North Jetty. Coos Bay Aids
to Navigation Team (ANT) and
Air Station North Bend mem-
bers worked collaboratively
from the ground and air to set
the heavy piece of equipment
in place. Every fall, the foghorn
is removed due to severe
weather conditions over the
winter and it returns in the
spring.
