Council to discuss LiDAR
The Siuslaw Watershed
Council (SWC) May general
meeting will be Wednesday,
May 31, at Big Bear Camp,
located near Walton.
The meeting will start at
6:30 p.m.
Camp hosts Hal and Tonia
have invited SWC to meet at
the Retreat Center, tucked
away up the Chickahominy. To
get there, take Highway 126
and, just west of the Walton
Store, turn on to Nelson
Mountain Road. From there,
proceed 4 1/2 miles to the Big
Bear Camp Retreat Center
sign on the left. Continue 1
mile to Big Bear Camp.
“LiDAR and Landslides in
the Siuslaw Watershed,” is the
topic being given by Kami
Ellingson, Watershed Program
Manager, Siuslaw National
Forest.
Historically, landslides were
identified and monitored using
1:24,000 aerial photography.
In 1996, the state of Oregon
funded an unprecedented,
ground-based landslide study
following a 100-year flood
event.
Now,
LiDAR
(Light
Detecting and Ranging) cov-
erage informs land manage-
men by allowing them to look
directly at the earth’s surface.

wowed theatergoers once
again. SEA, started in 1980,
is a nonprofit all-volunteer
organization which continues
to bring extraordinary enter-
tainment to the community.
The last concert of the 2016-
2017 Coastal Concert Series
was heard Wednesday, May
24, at the Florence Event
Center.
Piano Cameleons certainly
brought extraordinary music
and excellence. This was not
your everyday piano concert.
John Roney and Matt
Herskowitz thrilled attendees
with music from a variety of
composers and genres.
Roney grew up as a classi-
cal pianist truly finding joy
when he started studying jazz.
Herskowitz, a classical virtu-
oso, combined his love of
improvisation with street jazz.
Both lived and worked in
Montreal, where they met
through a common friend.
Together, they worked to com-
bine the two genres into one
new, unique and colorful
interpretation of both classical
and jazz.
During the pre-concert dis-
cussion, the duo explained
how the combination of the
two styles came into being.
They explained that both
styles are a means of expres-
sion.
In the classical style, the
expression of the music comes
from the composer.
In the Jazz style, the expres-
sion comes from the per-
former playing the composers
music. What they have done is
fused the two styles together
in a unique way where the
voices of the composer and
the performer are both heard.
Every note of the original
classical piece is played. It is
separated into parts played by
either Roney or Herskowitz at
different points in the per-
formance.
During the time when the
performer is not playing the
original, he is improvising.
This division, expanded
with the two piano format, led
to an exciting, unique and inti-
mate setting which enhanced
this listener’s experience.
An aspect of the perform-
ance that thrilled many in the
audience were the overhead
screens showing the piano
keyboards, allowing the audi-
ence to watch every note
played. For those listening and
watching, we knew who was
playing the original classical
piece, who was improvising
and when they switched.
The excitement and syn-
chronicity that the Piano
Cameleons
brought
to
Florence began as a melding
of their minds and the love of
music.
This was truly a night to
remember.

to Florence, the duo’s first
performance in the U.S.

The
Florence
Events
Center (FEC) will host two
evenings of music and come-
dy, as well as a free young
people’s concert, featuring
some of the world's best and
up-and-coming jazz musi-
cians.
The Siuslaw Jam, will be
held Friday, July 7, and
Saturday, July 8, at the FEC.
Friday’s 7 p.m. perform-
ance will feature an evening
of songs, stories and laughter
as jazz clarinetist and saxo-
phonist Ken Peplowski and
friends sharing “tales from
the road,” playing music
together and taking questions
from the audience.
Legendary comedian Pete
Barbutti opens the show with
a performance of his timeless
comedy that made him a reg-
ular on The Tonight Show.
Saturday’s performances
opens with a free, 2 p.m.
“Introduction to Jazz” mati-
nee hosted by Barbutti,
Peplowski and critically
acclaimed recording and
international touring artist
Clairdee.
Attendees will get a musi-
cal education starting with
jazz’s early origins and taking
it all the way up to today.
Young musicians are encour-
aged to bring their instru-
ments, as the concert will fin-
ish with a massive jam ses-
sion for the whole audience.
Saturday’s 7 p.m. perform-
ance will focus on Jazz and
the
American
Popular
Songbook with selections
from Nat King Cole, Frank
Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and
Lena Horne in addition to
well-known jazz favorites
“Night In Tunisia,” “Round
Midnight,” “The Duke,” and
“Airmail Special,” all in the
classic Norman Granz “Jazz
At The Philharmonic” vibe.
Hosted by Barbutti, the
evening will also include
100th anniversary birthday
tributes to Ella Fitzgerald,
Thelonious Monk, Dizzy
Gillespie, Dick Hyman, Duke
Ellington, Lena Horne and
many other Jazz Greats.
