CLAIMS SHOT PUT STATE CROWN
Siuslaw senior Carissa Oliver threw
the shot put 41-7.75 to claim the 4A
state title on Saturday.

At last weekend’s OSAA Class 4A
state track and field meet at Hayward
Field in Eugene, Siuslaw senior
thrower Carissa Oliver launched the
shot put for a personal record and the
state title with her mark of 41 feet,
7.75 inches.
Oliver also threw a PR in the dis-
cus at 132-11 for the 4A’s second-
best mark of the day.
Meanwhile, junior Trent Reavis
set a school record in the javelin with
a throw of 181-11, which earned
Reavis a second-place medal at state.
It also topped Siuslaw’s IAAF
javelin record of 177-9 set by Kody
Reavis in 2008.
The Vikings girls finished 11th
overall in team scoring with a tally of
23 points; Oliver accounted for 18 of
those points.
Senior distance runner Celie
Mans, who endured a battle with ten-
donitis at the meet, ran fourth in the
3,000 meters with a time of 10:39.93
to claim 5 team points.

The Vikings boys team finished
14th in team scoring with a total of
20 points.
Reavis contributed 13 points with
his second-place finish in the javelin
and a fourth-place throw in the shot
put (50-07.5).
Senior hurdler Clark Hooper ran
15.59 in the 110-meter hurdles for
fifth place and was sixth in the 300
hurdles with a time of 41.48.
Hooper came into Saturday’s
finals after setting personal bests in
both hurdles races during Friday’s
preliminaries with times of 15.59 in
the high hurdles and 41.42 in the
intermediates.
Three Lady Vikings qualified for
state individually, including senior
Destinie Tatum in the 800 meters,
junior Kaylee Graham in both hur-
dles events and freshman Hannah
Rannow in the 3,000 meters and the

trout recently. Water temps
are great and fish should be
hungry, so go catch them.

Ocean Dunes Golf Links in Florence.

The Wilson is in decent
shape, but is starting to get
pretty clear. Steelhead
should be winding down,
and the catch definitely
dropped off last week.
On the up side, summer
steelhead should be show-
ing up by the end of the
month.

The Salmon River closed
for wild and hatchery steel-
head on March 31 to protect
spawning wild steelhead.
SILETZ
Four Sailors were on hand for last
week’s two-day 1A state track and field
meet at Hayward Field in Eugene, May
18 and 19.
Senior Tyler Packebush, junior
Tanner Wilson and freshman Nathan
Roane represented the Sailor boys
while senior Josi Hays was the lone
Lady Sailors representative, competing
in three events.
Hays, who sept the throws at the
Mountain West District meet, compet-
ed in the discus, shot put and javelin.
For the boys, Packebush competed
in both the pole vault and 110 hurdles,
with Wilson competing in the discus
and javelin. Roan joined Wilson in the
javelin.
Packebush ran the 110 hurdles with
a personal best time of 18.30 for 11th
place. He also cleared 11-0 in the pole
vault for eighth place overall.
In the discus, Wilson threw 106-02
for 12th place, then landed 11th in the

The Siletz River opened
for wild Chinook on April 1
(1 per day and 2 per sea-
son). A few summer steel-
head are starting to be
caught in the lower river.
Drift boaters are having
success from Moonshine
Park to Siletz and bank
anglers are catching hatch-
ery fish in the Siletz gorge.
Casting spinners, drifting
bait or using a bobber and
jig can be effective.

stocked in Bradley Lake,
Empire Lakes, Butterfield
Lake, Eel Lake, Saunders
Lake, Tenmile Lakes,

Lake.
The road to Bluebill
Lake is closed due to flood-
ing and the lake has not
been stocked. Anglers are
having success catching
trout using small spinners
or Powerbait.
