Chinook fishing, bag limit reduced on Willamette
CLACKAMAS, Ore. — The
Oregon Department of Fish
and Wildlife announced that
salmon and steelhead anglers
will be limited to a three-day-
per-week schedule and a one-
Chinook bag limit in the lower
Willamette River.
The new limit began
Monday, May 8.
Under the new rules, until
further notice Chinook and
steelhead retention will be
open three days a week —
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
— downstream of Willamette
Falls, including the Multnomah
Channel, Gilbert River and the
Clackamas River downstream
of the Highway 99E Bridge.
The daily adult salmonid bag
limit is two hatchery fish, but
only one may be a Chinook.
The department did not
modify current rules that allow
the two-rod angling validation
and use of barbed hooks.
The reduced season structure
was implemented as a caution-
ary approach to managing the
fishery in the face of continued
low passage of both steelhead
and Chinook salmon, accord-
ing to Tucker Jones, ODFW’s
Ocean Salmon and Columbia
River Program manager.
As of May 3, only 51 adult
spring Chinook had crossed
Willamette Falls compared to
the 10-year average of 7,558
Chinook; with a previous low
passage at this date of 416 in
1993. To date, winter steelhead
passage is 721 adult fish, com-
pared to the 10-year average of
5,163.
“The cumulative passage at
Willamette Falls is substantial-
ly lower than anything we’ve
seen before,” said Jones,
adding, “Water temperatures
should be increasing and we
hope to see passage improve
dramatically.
“If this happens, and other
signs improve, we might
loosen restrictions but if poor
counts continue, an outright
closure might be warranted.”
Current regulations for the
Willamette River and tributar-
ies upstream of Willamette
Falls and Clackamas River
(upstream of the Highway 99E
Bridge) remain unchanged.
Chinook and steelhead
retention remains open under
permanent rules, and the previ-
ously adopted two-rod angling
validation remains in effect.

WEEKLY
FISHING REPORT FOR
THE LOCAL REGION
www.dfw.state.or.us/RR
NORTH COAST
LAKES:
Most of the North Coast
lakes were stocked with
trout this week. Water
temps are great and fish
should be hungry.
So far this season, Town
Lake near Pacific City has
been stocked with nearly
200 surplus summer steel-
head from Cedar Creek
Hatchery. In addition, 66
early run winter steelhead
were released there on Jan.
11. Nehalem Hatchery
released 200 surplus winter
steelhead into Vernonia
pond, 57 into Lost Lake
and 60 into Lake Lytle.
These fish get fairly active
in the lake and offer a
unique fishing experience,
especially when the rivers
are blown out. Once in the
lake they are considered
“trout” and do not require a
Combined Angling Tag.
Anglers are reminded,
however, that only one
trout per day over 20 inch-
es may be retained, and
these fish will almost all be
in that size range.
The 2017 trout stocking
schedule is available
online.
MID COAST LAKES:
Mid coast lakes have
been stocked and are fish-
ing well. The 2017 trout
stocking schedule is avail-
able online.
ALSEA RIVER AND

Steelhead fishing is open
on the Alsea River and list-

SILETZ RIVER:
Steelhead, Chinook
The Siletz River is open
for wild Chinook (1 per
day and 2 per season). A
few summer steelhead are
starting to be caught in the
lower river. Steelhead fish-
ing is fair. Drift boaters are
having success from
Moonshine Park to Siletz
and bank anglers are catch-
ing hatchery fish in the
Siletz gorge.
Casting spinners, drift-
ing bait or using a bobber
and jig can be effective.
WILSON RIVER:
Steelhead
The Wilson is in decent
shape. Steelhead should be
winding down but there
was still some good fishing
last week, although mostly
for wild steelhead.
